Summary of Position
The Vehicle Maintenance Worker plays a vital role in performing routine and emergency maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. This position emphasizes strong teamwork, a positive and service-oriented attitude, and a high level of pride in delivering quality work. Employees in this role collaborate closely with fellow staff to ensure safe and efficient fleet maintenance support.

Through consistent effort and teamwork, the Vehicle Maintenance Worker helps create efficient vehicle and equipment services that reflect community pride and promote positive user experiences.
Expected Hours of Work
Hours are typically Monday-Friday from 7 am to 3 pm. In addition to working hours, staff may be required to work additional events, including participation in scheduled rotation of stand-by duties. Hours may include, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform these essential functions involving a wide variety of complex and routine mechanical services on city vehicles and equipment:

1. Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair a wide variety of City vehicles and equipment, including Public Works, Police, Fire, and other municipal fleet assets.
2. Perform preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and scheduled services to maximize equipment reliability, performance, and service life.
3. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, brake, steering, suspension, transmission, drivetrain, HVAC, emissions, and computerized vehicle systems.
4. Maintain and repair gasoline, diesel, propane, hybrid, and electric-powered vehicles and equipment.
5. Install, inspect, maintain, and repair specialized equipment and accessories, including emergency lighting and warning systems, communications equipment, snowplows, spreaders, liftgates, and other vehicle-mounted equipment.
6. Perform welding, fabrication, and equipment modifications to repair or improve vehicles, equipment, and specialized fleet components.
7. Respond to vehicle and equipment breakdowns by performing field repairs.
8. Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment and a computerized asset management system to document inspections, repairs, labor, and parts inventory.
9. Maintain tools, shop equipment, and inventory while ensuring a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
10. Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, DOT, NFPA, and environmental standards, and maintain vehicles and equipment in a safe, operational condition.
11. Communicate effectively with City staff, supervisors, vendors, and contractors regarding maintenance priorities, repair status, and equipment needs.
12. Perform Snow & Ice Control operations as needed.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

• 18 years of age or older.
• High School diploma or GED.
• Valid driver's license.
• Valid MN Commercial Class B driver's license, or ability to obtain within 12 months of start date.
• Two (2) years of experience in maintenance, repair, and operation of vehicles or heavy equipment.
• Ability to operate a computer.
• Ability to operate equipment, acquire licenses, and complete training required for this position.
• Ability to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Desired Qualifications

• Advanced degree in automotive technology or related field.
• Four (4) years of experience working with general automotive, park maintenance equipment, light and heavy-duty standby generator systems, light and heavy-duty truck repair, municipal construction equipment, and emergency vehicles.
• Four (4) years of experience diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, fuel, drivetrain, and computerized vehicle systems.
• Experience maintaining emergency vehicles and equipment in accordance with applicable industry standards.
• Experience with welding, metal fabrication, and equipment modifications.
• Certified MN DOT Inspector

Work Environment and Physical Demands
Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors and may be conducted under adverse or extreme weather conditions. Exposure to hazardous conditions, including operating power tools and equipment, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, slippery conditions, fumes, annoying odors, grease and grime, and toxic materials, including raw sewage, garbage, landscaping chemicals, and hot asphalt. Employee is subject to noise while operating equipment, louder noise while operating in the Vehicle Maintenance garage or other workshop, and general noises in outdoor city environments. Employees may also be exposed to Bloodborne pathogens.
