What does an assistant to partner do?

An Assistant to Partner provides high-level administrative support to a partner or executive within a firm, such as a law, consulting, or accounting firm. Duties typically include managing schedules, coordinating meetings, handling correspondence, preparing documents, and assisting with client communications. This role often requires discretion, strong organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment. Assistants to partners play a crucial role in helping partners manage their workload efficiently and maintain strong client relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant to partner, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant to Partner, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience in administrative support, often backed by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with office software (like Microsoft Office Suite), calendar management systems, and sometimes project management tools is commonly required. Exceptional communication, discretion, and proactive problem-solving are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for managing multiple priorities, supporting executive-level tasks, and maintaining the efficiency and professionalism of the partner’s workflow.

How does an assistant to partner typically collaborate with various departments within a firm?

An Assistant to Partner often serves as a crucial liaison between the partner and other departments, such as finance, human resources, and marketing. This role involves coordinating meetings, managing communications, and ensuring that information flows smoothly across teams. You may be responsible for preparing reports, following up on action items, and facilitating cross-departmental projects, all while maintaining confidentiality and discretion. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are key to effectively supporting the partner and helping the broader team operate efficiently.
