Job description

Controller, Accounting Operations & FP&A

Join a remote-first, sponsor-backed professional services business at a stage where the finance function is becoming a true growth lever. This is an internal Controller role for someone who is already strong in accounting operations and wants a broader seat across faster close, cleaner reporting, FP&A support, acquisition integration, automation, and direct partnership with senior finance and executive leadership.

The Opportunity

The company is scaling through a mix of core services growth, new offerings, and acquisition activity. The finance team needs a hands-on Controller who can keep the accounting engine accurate and dependable while helping modernize how the business closes, reports, forecasts, and integrates new lines of business.

This is not a narrow bookkeeping seat, and it is not a hands-off VP Finance role. It is ideal for a highly capable Controller who wants to stay close to the GL, own the accounting operating cadence, and build toward broader FP&A and strategic finance exposure over time.

What You Will OwnAccounting Operations

Own day-to-day accounting operations across payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, reconciliations, month-end close, and reporting workflows.

Lead the close process with a focus on speed, accuracy, reviewability, and repeatability.

Maintain clean financial records that support leadership reporting, board reporting, audit readiness, and future lender-related data requests.

Oversee and develop one direct report in a senior accountant / accounting specialist capacity.

Support required registrations, compliance-related finance administration, and other operational finance needs as they arise.

Reporting, FP&A, and Leadership Support

Build and improve financial reporting packages so leadership can review results earlier, identify insights faster, and make better decisions.

Support monthly variance analysis, fluctuation analysis, forecasting, budgeting, and longer-term planning exercises.

Help prepare operational finance inputs for board reporting, annual budgeting, sponsor-backed reporting, audit readiness, and valuation-related needs.

Partner with the finance leader on lender-facing data preparation if and when the company moves into lender relationships.

Translate accurate accounting outputs into useful finance insights for a scaling professional services business.

Systems, Automation, and Process Modernization

Assess the current finance and accounting tech stack and help determine what should be automated, upgraded, or replaced over time.

Improve capacity in the controller function through better processes and tools rather than simply adding headcount.

Identify opportunities to automate month-end close, reconciliations, AP workflows, reporting packages, and recurring data pulls.

Support future ERP, accounting system, forecasting tool, or related finance systems implementation work.

Acquisition Integration

Help integrate accounting operations for a recently acquired business line currently relying on informal or part-time bookkeeping support.

Create a more scalable accounting process for the acquired business, including fixed-price services revenue and related reporting.

Support acquisition-related accounting integration work such as GL alignment, reporting consistency, data cleanup, and operating cadence.

Bring practical judgment to a business where acquisition activity and integration work are expected to remain part of the finance environment.

What Makes You a Strong Fit

You have strong Controller-level experience owning accounting operations in a smaller or mid-sized business where finance and accounting responsibilities are not overly siloed.

You are comfortable being accountable for the GL, close, reporting accuracy, and accounting process discipline.

You have meaningful exposure to FP&A, forecasting, variance analysis, budgeting, or board reporting, even if your core strength is still accounting.

You have worked in a sponsor-backed, PE-backed, VC-backed, or similarly high-accountability environment where speed, reporting quality, and leadership visibility matter.

You have experience with professional services, project-based accounting, fixed-price services revenue, or other operationally complex revenue models.

You can support a business with a mix of services and subscription-style revenue, even if project-based accounting has been the more complex part of your background.

You have either participated in acquisition integration work before or have strong adjacent experience organizing new entities, business lines, systems, and reporting flows.

You are comfortable working directly with senior finance leadership and being a reliable leverage point for better reporting, analysis, and operating cadence.

You are hands-on, fast, precise, and willing to improve the process while still doing the underlying accounting work well.

Nice-to-Haves

ERP implementation, accounting system implementation, forecasting tool implementation, or finance systems modernization experience.

Automation experience across close, reconciliations, AP, reporting, or recurring finance workflows.

Experience preparing data for lenders, debt reporting, covenant tracking, or quarterly lender packages.

Familiarity with government contracting, federal contractor environments, regulated services businesses, or compliance-heavy operating models.

Experience in a multi-service-line business with project-based, fixed-price, managed services, and subscription-style revenue.

Audit support experience in a sponsor-backed or acquisition-oriented environment.

The First 90 DaysFirst 30 Days

Learn the current accounting operations, reporting cadence, systems, team structure, and business model.

Identify the biggest opportunities to streamline month-end close and reporting package preparation.

Begin improving reporting workflows so leadership can review results earlier and with more confidence.

First 60 Days

Take meaningful ownership of integrating accounting operations for the recently acquired business line.

Move acquired-business accounting away from informal or part-time support toward a scalable internal process.

Continue tightening the monthly close and recurring reporting cadence.

First 90 Days

Establish a clearer operating rhythm across close, reporting, finance inputs, and leadership review.

Help prepare for upcoming budgeting, audit, valuation, and sponsor-backed reporting needs.

Build a practical roadmap for finance tech stack improvements and automation opportunities.

Who This Role Is Best For

This role is a strong fit if you are already a highly capable Controller and want your next role to stretch beyond traditional accounting operations. You may be earlier in your career than a VP Finance, but you have the judgment, technical accounting foundation, and operating pace to become a broader finance leader over time.

You will likely enjoy this role if you are energized by a scaling sponsor-backed company, direct exposure to finance leadership, building structure without a fully built playbook, and making accounting faster, cleaner, and more useful to the business.

Location & Work Model

Remote role.

This is an internal corporate finance role, not a client-facing consulting delivery role.

Compensation

Base salary range: $140,000-$175,000.
