What does an assistant to attorney do?

An Assistant to Attorney, often called a legal assistant or legal secretary, provides administrative and clerical support to lawyers in law firms or legal departments. Their responsibilities typically include managing schedules, preparing legal documents, filing paperwork, conducting basic legal research, and communicating with clients. This role helps attorneys stay organized and ensures that legal processes run smoothly and efficiently.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an assistant to attorney, and how does this role support legal teams?

As an Assistant to Attorney, your daily tasks often include managing schedules, preparing legal documents, organizing case files, and handling client communications. You’ll play a key role in ensuring attorneys stay organized and meet deadlines, which may involve coordinating meetings, filing court documents, and conducting basic research. This position frequently requires working closely with other legal staff, such as paralegals and legal secretaries, to ensure smooth workflow and support for active cases. Attention to detail and strong multitasking abilities are essential, as you may be juggling several tasks at once in a fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant to attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant to Attorney, you need strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and familiarity with legal terminology, often supported by a degree or certification in legal studies. Proficiency in case management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis is typically required. Excellent communication, discretion, and the ability to multitask under pressure are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are essential for efficiently supporting attorneys, ensuring accurate documentation, and maintaining smooth legal operations.
