Department Overview
Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) plays an integral role in the success of Michigan Medicine (MM) by providing clinicians, educators, researchers, students, and staff with exceptional technology-related information, products, services, and support. HITS also provides institutional expertise related to IT strategy, security, infrastructure, and resource management.
Division Overview
The HITS Academic IT division (Acad IT) serves the education and research communities at the University of Michigan Medical School. We engage faculty, students, and staff to provide a holistic portfolio of software, applications, infrastructure, device support, and custom projects to enable innovation and excellence.
Job Summary
HITS is looking for a senior-level candidate to fulfill the role of an Application Server Administrator (Application Programmer/Analyst). You will report to the Manager of the HITS Academic Compute, Systems, and Devices teams, and will assist in the development and maintenance of a set of robust and sustainable solutions for Michigan Medicine (MM) faculty and staff supporting innovative research initiatives and advancing educational programs. You will work closely with researchers and educators to help guide and align needs to existing services or design and implement solutions as necessary that best support their academic activities. Your work is directly aligned with the education and research strategic pillars of the Medical School. You will work collaboratively within the Academic IT Technical Services & Engagement department and build relationships with other HITS and Campus IT teams. Michigan Medicine is a collaborative environment with an extraordinary scope of responsibilities and priorities. Responsibilities*
Operational/Production Support (35%)
- Effectively collaborate and gather technical requirements with cross-functional teams to provide robust and sustainable solutions for academic and research systems.
- Identify and quantify customer requirements, delineating the gaps between customer requirements and the capabilities of existing technology.
- Diagnose and resolve technology problems and workflow challenges associated with research systems.
- Assist in the installation, operation, and maintenance of technology and IT services used by educators and researchers.
- Perform root cause analysis on recurring IT problems and develop recommendations for resolution.
- Perform installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of Windows and Linux operating systems running on research and education systems.
- Assist in the development and delivery of end-user training for constituents, helping shift workflows from in-lab systems to the datacenter, or on the shared campus cluster.
- Partner with vendors to seek solutions to proprietary issues.
- Participate in workgroups, governance committee meetings, and projects, as assigned.
Security/Compliance (20%)
- Maintain operating system and application patching for Windows and Linux environments to ensure compliance with Michigan Medicine and University security standards.
- Identify, assess, and remediate known security vulnerabilities within the service-level agreements (SLAs) established by Information Assurance.
- Participate in routine vulnerability scanning, reporting, and remediation activities for supported devices.
- Assess and remediate security risks for managed Windows and Linux environments spanning the entire stack of technology involved (e.g., vendor-supplied systems, specialized instruments, or legacy systems).
- Work directly with research labs to support vendor-supplied systems and software that enable and advance research at Michigan Medicine, while ensuring appropriate security controls are in place.
- Collaborate with Information Assurance, vendors, and internal IT partners to evaluate security findings and implement approved mitigation strategies.
- Ensure supported systems and services adhere to applicable security policies and regulations (e.g., SPG 601.27, HIPAA, FISMA, FERPA, NIST 800-171).
- Guide researchers and educators on secure computing practices and risk mitigation strategies for academic and research systems.
Service Improvement/Engineering (30%)
- Understand academic and research workflows, providing creative solutions to our faculty and staff we support.
- Partner with technical peers across Michigan Medicine, and the University, to identify or develop solutions while being mindful of existing IT services.
- Stay current with advances in relevant technologies.
- Develop and document procedures and maintenance plans for the team.
- Manage Windows & Linux systems using scripting (e.g., PowerShell, Bash) to automate configuration, maintenance, and remediation tasks.
- Use automation techniques and configuration/management tools to manage, configure, and support Windows & Linux systems (e.g., Red Hat Ansible, Automox).
- Configure, test, and support new releases of supported operating systems (e.g., Windows 11 LTSC, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu).
- Develop, package, and deploy standardized applications and configurations to enable rapid, repeatable deployment to managed systems.
- Create and maintain scripts, automation workflows, and tooling to improve reliability, consistency, and scalability of academic and research computing systems and environments.
- Develop and document programming and automation standards to support long-term sustainability and knowledge sharing within the team.
Relationship Building/Communications (5%)
- Work closely with the team lead and manager to determine priorities and the scope of work.
- Connect academic customers to appropriate service providers that fall outside the scope of the team.
- Maintain an excellent working relationship with peers and trusted service providers with whom the team partners to deliver services.
- In the performance of all job duties, at all times, be responsible for delivering optimal customer service and providing clear concise communications.
- Proactively manage customer expectations and provide clear and timely communication.
- Communicate directly with academic and research stakeholders, trusted service providers external to HITS, and any required vendors to ensure that services are accurately aligned to the business needs of our academic and research customers.
Project Management/Reporting Analysis (10%)
- Apply project management skills to advance small-sized projects through deployment.
- Work collaboratively with project stakeholders to ensure good requirements are captured and agreed upon.
Required Qualifications*
Senior
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent experience.
