Assistant Swimming Instructor Jobs in Evanston, IL

Overview:

The Swim Instructor is a Part-Time Position. We offer competitive compensation, PTO and an employee discount for part-time employees.

Job Purpose:

Under the direction of the Swim Coordinator, the position of Swim Instructor acts as a role model for participants and is responsible for providing instruction, direction, and safety to students in Swim Academy. This position is also responsible for assisting with all other Swim Academy functions.
Essential Functions:

• Understand and embrace the structure of the Swim Academy.
• Represent the program, facilities and Park District in a positive, respectful manner.
• Provide a safe and positive learning environment for the participants.
• Follow lesson plans provided by Swim Academy, teaching high quality technique.
• Complete attendance records for each class.
• Use terminology for skill work as described by the program to reinforce consistency between classes and coaches.
• Understand, follow and enforce all Park District rules.
• Attend all pre-season and in-service training sessions.
• Adhere to the policies, procedures and expectations set forth by the program and Park District including (but not limited to), class start and end times, attendance requirements, and paperwork requirements.
• Become familiar with participants and parents; know their names, personalities, skills, and interests.
• Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image by addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents immediately.
• Monitor skills of each participant and complete evaluations at the end of the session.
• Keep program supplies, equipment, and facility space clean, organized, and safe.
• Distribute all flyers, promotional materials, and handouts as assigned.
• Follow all Swim Academy appearance guidelines.

Additional Functions:

• Assist with additional events and tasks as needed.
• Promote teamwork and safety among coaches and participants.
• Attend staff meetings as specified.
• Bring all concerns and problems to the Swim Coordinator.
• Know all emergency action plans and execute plans properly as needed.

Knowledge, Skill and Work ExperienceRequired:

• Must be at least 16 years of age.
• Must be able to tread water and survival float for 30 seconds, swim front crawl and back crawl 25 yards with good form and rhythmic breathing. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Previous swim team and/or swim instructor experience is preferred but not required.
• Jeff Ellis and Associates Swim Instructor, or able to obtain within one year
• Ability to work within program time frames.
• Enthusiasm towards various age and skill ranges.
• Ability to verbally communicate and physically demonstrate instructions and skills to students.
• Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and abe able to perform tasks without supervision.
• Exhibit willingness to accept and apply feedback.
• Certification in advanced Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 1 month of employment and keep certification current. The District provides this training.

Recommended:

• Previous swim instruction experience
• Jeff Ellis and Associates Lifeguard
• High School Diploma

Work Environment, Physical Demands and Considerations:

• Frequently sitting, walking, standing, swimming and typing
• Occasionally climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling
• Extended periods of time in the water.
• Exposure to quick changes in temperature between pool and lobby areas.
• Ability to present ideas and recommendations in a concise verbal and written manner.
• Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively.
• Ability to communicate with staff and participants in clear, concise manner.
• Ability to handle questions, complaints and concerns from staff and public in a friendly, courteous and professional manner.

Hours:

Fall and Winter (September-February): Tuesdays 5:45-7:45P, Wednesdays 5:45-7:45P, and Sundays 9:00A-12:30P

Summer (June-August): Monday-Thursdays 8:30-11:00A & 4:45-7:45P, and Saturdays 8:45-11:45A

External: Patrons of Park District of Oak Park; residents of Oak Park, WSSRA, Partner Organizations including governmental and non-profit groups, and the Oak Park Business Community
