The roles often overlap in credentials and work environment, but the Software Engineer position involves greater autonomy and technical expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant software engineer?

To thrive as an Assistant Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), software development fundamentals, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic debugging tools, and common development frameworks is important. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication help you work efficiently within teams and adapt to evolving project requirements. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering quality code, learning quickly, and contributing to successful software projects.

What are some common challenges faced by assistant software engineers when joining a new development team?

Assistant Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to unfamiliar codebases, learning new technologies or frameworks used by the team, and understanding the team's workflow and communication practices. Job description

Join our team and what we'll accomplish together

Ready to create innovative solutions and best practices?

Join a team of passionate technical leaders.

Accelerate cloud adoption by building hardened, ready-to-go patterns on Google Cloud Platform. Embed security, reliability, operational excellence, and cost efficiency as immutable guardrails within cloud-native solutions. Collaborate across the organization to share information, evolve governance controls, and simplify work processes. Our team includes machine learning engineers, data engineers,  developers, and technical architects with diverse technical backgrounds to ensure successful public cloud project outcomes that drive AI innovation across the organization.

As a Software Developer with the AI Accelerator (AIA), your ability to design and build full-stack applications, knowledge of the Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and cloud related CI/CD tools and practices will help drive success. You will leverage your understanding of developing AI-powered applications to partner with delivery teams and internal and external stakeholders to collaborate on scalable, reliable, secure cloud application designs and implementations. You will help define and share reference architectures and best practices across TELUS.

What you will do
  • Design, implement, and maintain robust applications and infrastructure to support the development and deployment of cutting-edge generative AI and machine learning tools for TELUS
  • Evaluate and compare different technical approaches, presenting their trade-offs to the team, to guide architectural decisions for AI projects
  • Design and develop tools, components and processes to support public cloud service intake, CI/CD, and security
  • Lead proof of concept efforts for candidate architectures, products and tools
  • Adopt and communicate new concepts, ideas, techniques, best practices and technology assistance at all organizational levels
  • Assist in the remediation of application stability and performance
  • Work to establish required cloud infrastructures and frameworks
What you bring
  • You have extensive experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or another cloud provider, including application hosting, BigQuery, and serverless computing with tools such as Cloud Functions and Cloud Run
  • You have knowledge of cloud security principles and frameworks, as well as hands-on experience with modern DevOps concepts and workflows
  • You bring strong backend development expertise, particularly in building and integrating REST APIs with frameworks like FastAPI
  • You have practical experience in Python development, especially in data-driven environments and for building scalable applications
  • You have worked with cloud-native technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform for container orchestration and infrastructure as code
  • You are familiar with CI/CD best practices, using tools such as GitHub Actions for managing workflows and Cloud Build to automate deployments and maintain reliability
  • You have a solid understanding of monitoring, alerting, and logging solutions within cloud-native ecosystems
  • You are confident in communicating complex technical ideas to diverse audiences, including developers, business stakeholders, and senior leadership
  • You have development experience with Python and/or JavaScript/Typescript
  • You keep up with the latest advancements in ML and GenAI technology and are excited to explore new techniques and technologies

Great-to-Haves

  • Advanced expertise with GCP services, particularly Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and BigQuery optimization
  • Familiarity with frontend frameworks like React.js for building full-stack applications
  • A background in using Python for data engineering, machine learning, or generative AI workflow

Advanced knowledge of English is required because you will most of the time interact in English with external parties (clients, suppliers, candidates, external partners, etc.); interact in English with internal parties (colleagues, internal partners, stakeholders, etc.); and work with IT tools whose interface is only accessible in English as part of this position's main responsibilities given its international scope.
