Description ****Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.
Title: Casual Hire - Assistant Softball Coach Hiring Unit: UHM Athletics Location: Softball Date Posted: September 1, 2026 Closing date:September 3, 2026 Full Time / Part Time: Hours may vary depending on programmatic needs. Duties and Responsibilities (* denotes essential functions): *Assists with all aspects of NCAA Division I Softball Program, including student development, on field coaching, compliance with NCAA, Conference and University of Hawaii rules and regulations, student-athlete academic achievement, and other duties assigned by the Head Coach. *Assists and participates in practices and intercollegiate competitions.
Teach necessary batting skills from the basic fundamentals to the techniques and strategies of team play. Inputs data into scouting software. *Promotes and fosters a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship by team members.
Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the field. *Promotes and maintains an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority. *Participates in sports clinics, exhibitions, and camps as approved.
May travel with the team as required. *Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act. *Maintains collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the sports program.
*Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies. *Knows, recognizes, and complies with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees, and the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and of the affiliated conference as now constituted or as may be amended in the future. Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if there are reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students, or others, have occurred or will occur.
Performs other duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited four year college or university; Experience coaching softball at the collegiate level or at a high level or playing competitive fast pitch ball; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Knowledge of softball as competed at the collegiate level.
Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
Ability to work outside normally scheduled work hours including day, night, weekend and /or holiday hours as directed. Ability to travel with the team as required. Ability to throw live batting practice.
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds including but not limited to people of all ages with various ethnicities, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 45 days of employment start date. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Computer, cell phone and social media technology competency.
Desirable Qualifications Softball coaching experience at a high level.
