Patent Agent / Technical Specialist

Locations: Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Fort Worth, Houston, New York, Orange County, Palo Alto, San Antonio, San Francisco, Tysons, Washington, D.C.

Direct Counsel is seeking a Patent Agent or Technical Specialist with 2+ years of patent prosecution experience to join a leading national law firm and its growing Intellectual Property practice. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically skilled professional with a background in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, or physics to work on sophisticated patent matters for innovative clients.

Position Overview

The ideal candidate will have well-developed experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications, along with technical expertise in wireless telecommunications standards, signal processing, or computer networking. Candidates should have a strong technical foundation and the ability to translate complex technologies into clear and effective patent applications.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications.

  • Draft high-quality patent applications, including specifications, claims, and related documents.

  • Develop and execute patent prosecution strategies.

  • Analyze patentability and assist with prior art and technical research.

  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly through written patent applications and prosecution documents.

  • Work closely with attorneys, inventors, and clients to understand technologies and develop effective patent strategies.

  • Assist with responding to Office Actions and other patent prosecution matters.

Qualifications
  • 2+ years of patent prosecution experience.

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical field.

  • Well-developed skills in patent application preparation and prosecution.

  • Technical or patent experience involving wireless telecommunications standards, signal processing, or computer networking required.

  • Strong technical writing and analytical skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to understand and communicate complex technologies.

  • Patent Bar registration/admission preferred for Patent Agent candidates.

Compensation

The anticipated starting base salary range is $110,000–$180,000 annually, with actual compensation determined based on skills, experience, and other job-related factors.
