This position assists the Sunday School Superintendent with the operation of The Mother Church Sunday School.

Job Details Description

Department: Office of the Clerk

This position assists the Sunday School Superintendent with the operation of The Mother Church Sunday School. The Assistant Superintendent is someone who enjoys working with young people and welcomes all students, families, and visitors with warmth and love. Likewise, this position actively supports and encourages our large volunteer staff. This individual appreciates the importance of spiritual education for children and embraces the guidance in the Manual of The Mother Church regarding Sunday School (Article XX, Sections 1-3). The Assistant Superintendent is committed to approaching the work prayerfully, resolving issues on a metaphysical basis, and embracing the local community in prayer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administers the weekly activities of The Mother Church Sunday School, including online Sunday School, with direction from the Superintendent (60%)
    • Maintains the teaching schedule to ensure all needs are filled each Sunday, keeps the substitutes list full, and assists teachers in their search for a substitute, when needed.
    • Supports the smooth operation of Sunday School, including coordinating last‑minute staffing changes, handling attendance and collection, communicating with the online Sunday School Technician, and supporting the Superintendent, teachers, parents, children and other visitors however needed.
    • Trains and supports greeters to “receive students” (Manual, p. 62) and visitors with love and to provide a pleasant registration process.
    • Fills in for the Superintendent, as needed, including conducting Sunday morning staff meetings.
    • Proactively supports harmony in the Sunday School by discerning needs / challenges and identifying fresh opportunities, all in close partnership with the Superintendent.
    • Manages the Sunday School space, providing a clean, orderly, bright, and welcoming atmosphere, where all appropriate Sunday School books and resources are in good condition and easily accessible; ensures the space is made Sunday‑School‑ready following other events; keeps storage areas well‑stocked and organized; coordinates with Facilities to move and arrange furniture, make repairs, and maintain space cleanliness.
    • Coordinates the smooth operation of online Sunday School classes, including communications with Technicians, parents, students, and teachers; ensures each online student has their own copy of necessary Sunday School books; provides Zoom instructions and technical assistance to families.
    • Works regularly with other departments and groups.
    • May give reports at local member meetings in place of Superintendent.
    • Prepares metaphysically to welcome children, young adults, and their families to Sunday School each Sunday, and considers ways to actively welcome members of the Boston community.
  • Coordinates small projects (20%)
    • Takes initiative to assist or lead new projects, ideas, or processes that further the mission of Sunday School in accordance with the Manual of The Mother Church.
    • Organizes Sunday School gatherings, such as the annual outdoor picnic and regular teacher gatherings.
    • Coordinates the development of promotional materials with P&DSG.
    • Organizes an annual charitable drive in support of the local community.
  • Oversees administrative needs of the Sunday School (20%)
    • Processes routine paperwork and maintains Sunday School files.
    • Orders and stocks supplies for the Sunday School.
    • Prepares schedules, reports, and spreadsheets; maintains Sunday School data in designated spreadsheets and/or database.
    • Coordinates the department's operational needs with other departments, such as Facilities, OCIO, etc.
    • Assists in the development and proofreading of departmental communications, website copy, desk announcements, etc.
    • Coordinates recruiting, interviewing, and training of volunteer staff, both in‑person and online.
    • Oversees reference checks and criminal background checks for all staff.
    • Tracks Sunday School expenses.
    • Processes monthly payments to Sunday School pianists and substitute Superintendents.

Includes overseeing and/or training of Sunday School teachers, substitutes, greeters, online teachers, and interns.

Regular Contacts
  • Sunday School students, parents/guardians, and volunteer staff.
  • Managers and staff of Clerk’s department.
  • Other departments, e.g. OCIO, Facilities, ISD, General Counsel, MBE Library, Church Activities, Office of Language Services, Web development, etc.
Education / Experience

Undergraduate degree preferred, education degree a plus. Job requires practical experience in office administration and support as well as working with staff and children.

Job Requirements

Strong interpersonal skills. Good event planner. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Flexible and highly organized with attention to detail. Alert to and discerning of appropriate communication and behavior in a variety of situations. Strives to be metaphysically ready and turns to prayer in every situation.

Technology Skills

Solid computer skills and technical proclivity. Working knowledge of Google Drive, MS Office (Word and Excel), Adobe, Zoom, Slack, WhatsApp, and other online communication programs.

Work Environment

This part‑time position works regularly in the Sunday School on Sundays and in the office during the week. The option to fulfill some hours from home can be discussed with manager. Occasional outdoor events.

Engagement with Christian Science

Membership in The Mother Church and Primary Class instruction required.

Pay Range

$40,547 – $52,711 annually (part‑time, based on 20 hours per week)

Background check required given potential for direct contact with children. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.
