SCOPE OF POSITION


Working as a contractor within the industries of infrastructure, construction and mining, theField Engineer/Geologist Internis responsible to assist in the safe, efficient and accurate operation of geotechnical and geophysical site investigation equipment. Given significant responsibility, the Field Engineer/Geologist Intern is tasked with assisting the smooth and accurate execution of various projects, from deployment of equipment to data acquisition and submission. He or she will work closely with experienced staff (engineers, geologists and equipment operators), gaining hands-on experience with unique heavy machinery and a sophisticated suite of geotechnical instruments in a variety of environments. The Field Engineer/Geologist Intern will assume numerous other roles as the ever-changing demands of the workplace dictate. A successful candidate must have well-developed interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, as well as strong problem-solving abilities.


This role requires significant and frequent travelto job sites, mostly within the Intermountain Western US, but sometimes beyond. Travel duration can often be7-14 days at a time, but can vary longer or shorter, but can vary due to project demands. ConeTec offers generous Per Diem rates for out-of-town work.


OVERALL GOALS FOR POSITION


  • Develop a strong working knowledge of site investigation practices and procedures.
  • Build comprehension of soil mechanics, in-situ testing, and geophysical field investigations.
  • Gain experience and exposure as a contractor in several of North America's largest industries (mining, infrastructure, transportation, commercial development, etc.).

ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS


Equipment Operation

  • Familiarize with and operate CPTu equipment, VST, sampling systems, numerous geophysical instruments and other in-situ testing equipment in a safe and productive manner.
  • Assist the operator with all tasks and perform general rig duties as required.
  • Assist with logistics for the mobilization and demobilization of equipment in hard-to-access environments.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair on various pieces of equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • The candidate must be willing to travel for 2-3 weeks at a time to various sites, mostly in the Intermountain West Region.
  • Strong preference for candidates located in Northern Utah. This position does not include relocation or housing benefits.


Data Collection & Reporting

  • Perform testing to collect data in a timely, orderly and accurate manner.
  • Compile the collected data, sample logs, etc. on a daily basis and submit to the data team for further processing.
  • Collect field notes and photos to guarantee the translation of data from field to office is as highly accurate as possible.
  • See how we prepare and compile final field data/report for our clients.


Health & Safety

  • Identify with and respect ConeTec's safety culture.
  • Ensure proper preparation and knowledge of all necessary safe operating procedures before beginning any job.
  • Report any safety-related incidents, infractions, or near misses to the Project Manager and the HSE Officer, immediately.
  • Know and follow the incident reporting protocol at all times.


Other General Responsibilities

  • Communicate with the Engineer/Supervisor or Project Manager as to the day's tasks ahead, any equipment problems, any equipment or logistical needs, any data problems or field observations.
  • Perform other office and shop functions as required.
  • Seek ways to improve operating procedures/processes.
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, moving heavy materials up to 50 lbs., climbing, crawling as well as walking on uneven ground, working long hours, and working in all weather conditions.


SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE REQUIRED


Education requirements:
1. Must be enrolled in an Engineering/Geology program at an accredited post-secondary institution.


Experience requirements:
1. Previous field experience would be an asset, but not necessary.

2. Previous shop experience (mechanical, electrical, hydraulic systems, fabrication, etc.) would be an asset, but not necessary.


Technical skill requirements:
1. Experience with Microsoft Excel is an asset.
2. Electrical and mechanical skills would prove useful but not necessary.


Soft skill requirements:
1. Must possess strong communication skills and represent the company in a professional manner.
2. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
3. Must be responsible and work well independently or in a team setting with minimal supervision.
4. Must enjoy working outdoors and travelling for extended periods of time.
5. Must enjoy performing a wide variety of duties and be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
