Job description

POSITION DESCRIPTION: ASSISTANT RETAIL MANAGER 

As the official philanthropic and collaborative partner of Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon Conservancy's mission is to inspire generations of park champions to cherish and support the natural and cultural wonder of Grand Canyon. One key way that this mission is fulfilled is by raising funds through retail sales of official Grand Canyon National Park products. GCC’s five in-park stores feature a wide variety of books, maps, apparel, and gifts all inspired by Grand Canyon. In addition, each store’s highly-trained Interpretive Sales team is dedicated to ensuring that every visitor has a GCC representative they can go to with questions so their experience at GCNP is a memorable one.

The primary purpose of Assistant Retail Manager position is to assist and support the GCC Retail Store Manager in store operations and staff leadership. This hands-on position ensures that store revenue and supporter recruitment goals are met, that store staff are well trained for impactful interactions, that world-class visitor service is provided, and that the stores operate efficiently and effectively. In addition, those in this role successfully build and maintain deep knowledge of GCC products in order to proactively assist visitors with product selection and purchases, including upselling whenever possible.  

This on-site, non-exempt, full-time, benefit-eligible position reports to the Retail Store Manager and is located at the Grand Canyon. Rental housing may be available at a nominal cost to the employee, but there is no reimbursement of relocation costs if accrued. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include, but are not limited to:

•    Demonstrating and consistently modeling world-class customer service that positively impacts the visitor experience overall as well drives product and membership sales.
•    Maintaining a high level of employee engagement by fostering a positive workplace environment and  motivating/encouraging individual team members to reach their potential.
•    Following policies and procedures which ensure effective store operations as well as proactive and productive communication with visitors, GCC colleagues, park staff, vendors, and all with whom they have contact.
•    Assisting with store staff recruitment, hiring, and staff evaluation processes to ensure maximized talent is in place; this may include participation in candidate interviews, new employee onboarding/orientation, ongoing training, and feedback/recognition/coaching/corrective actions as needed to optimize the qualifications of each team member. 
•    Supporting Grand Canyon National Park’s Junior Ranger program and assist in swearing in Junior Rangers who have completed the requirements
•    Ensuring all daily financial transactions are accurate including cash drawer reconciliations, discrepancy resolutions, and nightly deposits
•    Supporting all inventory assessment for exactness, including performing regular cycle counts, year-end inventories, and min/max levels to ensure accurate instock conditions and products are available to meet visitor demand.
•    Assisting in the design and implementation of merchandising changes/modifications, and participating in store walkthroughs under the direction of the retail team management.
•    Maintaining the store environment including cleanliness and organization of all store areas, including the sales floor, break room, stock room, supply, and administrative office.
•    Other duties as assigned.

TOTAL COMPENSATION
This is a full-time, benefit-eligible, non-exempt position with a target salary of $21.00/hour. If needed, rental housing located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and owned by GCC may be available at a nominal cost to the employee. Specific requirements will be discussed during the interview process.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum three years of retail experience, including at least one year of prior experience gained within GCC at a Level 2 Visitor Experience Specialist or externally in a like role.[LC1.1]
Demonstrative computer skills including experience with Microsoft office products
Willingness to work a flexible schedule based on in-store operational needs including evenings, weekends, and holidays in any of GCC's Park Stores.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND CHARACTERISTICS
Supervisory or management experience[LC2.1]
Working knowledge of retail operations, computerized cash register operations, product merchandising, retail financials, and accounting
Demonstrated ability to lead by example act as a role model, and set the standard for excellence
Ability to multitask and remain calm and focused in a fast-paced environment, and exercise good judgment
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Extensive knowledge of Grand Canyon National Park and the greater GCNP area, and GCC products & services
Passion for the mission of GCC and Grand Canyon National Park
The ability to promote and maintain a positive work environment[LC3.1]

WORKING CONDITIONS
Standing for long periods, up to ten hours each day
Frequent, extended periods of repetitive hand motion required by the operation of the cash register
Occasional lifting of product boxes up to 40 pounds
The work is indoors at elevations more than 7,000 feet above sea level
