Job description

WE'RE HIRING

Project Engineer / Assistant Project Manager

Westbrook, Maine • Projects across Maine, New Hampshire, and beyond

New to construction? Good — we'll teach you the rest. Bring the drive.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Since 1993, BENCHMARK has been turning blueprints into buildings across Maine and New Hampshire, and we're looking for a Project Engineer / Assistant Project Manager ready to learn the business from the ground up — literally. This is a great fit for someone just starting out (recent grad, intern-turned-hire, or career changer) who wants hands-on experience alongside people who'll actually show you the ropes. You won't be fetching coffee — you'll be out on-site, measuring, documenting, and learning how a real project comes together, with a team that's genuinely invested in your growth.

WHAT YOU'LL ACTUALLY BE DOING

▪ Assist the Superintendent and Project Manager with day-to-day field operations

▪ Take field measurements and layout, and help verify work matches drawings and specifications

▪ Maintain daily field reports, logs, and jobsite documentation

▪ Track material deliveries and help coordinate with subcontractors on-site

▪ Support quality control walk-throughs and help maintain punch lists

▪ Take progress photos and help keep project records organized and current

▪ Learn and help enforce jobsite safety standards

▪ Support scheduling updates and help track project milestones

▪ Assist with as-built drawings and closeout documentation

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE

▪ Minimal experience required — an internship, coursework, or genuine interest in construction is enough to start

▪ A four-year degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field is a plus, but not required

▪ Willingness to learn, ask questions, and be out on the jobsite in all conditions

▪ Comfortable with basic computer tools (Microsoft Office); exposure to AutoCAD or Procore is a bonus, not a requirement

▪ Strong attention to detail and solid communication skills

▪ A team-first attitude and the drive to grow into a Project Engineer or Project Manager role over time

EDUCATION

▪ Four-year college degree preferred, but not required — relevant coursework, internships, or field experience will be considered

WHY OUR CREW STICKS AROUND

We're not a family business — but stick with us a while and it starts to feel like one. Here's what our team says they love most:

▪ Autonomy — nobody's hovering over your shoulder. Own your work.

▪ Real trust and respect, from leadership on down

▪ A genuine sense of camaraderie — the good-natured ribbing kind, not the forced kind

▪ A team that actually has your back when things get tough on-site

▪ Zero micromanagement — we hire good people and let them do their jobs

▪ A workplace that's fun, upbeat, and doesn't take itself too seriously

▪ Proof it works: 75% of our team was referred by another employee

LET'S BUILD SOMETHING TOGETHER

Think you're the right fit? We'd love to hear from you. Send your resume to info@benchmarkconstruction. and let us know which role you're after. No recruiters, no games, just a conversation.
