We are looking for an experienced Construction Engineer/Construction Project Supervisor to join our South Bend, IN office and oversee construction activities for diverse transportation and infrastructure projects across the Northern Indiana region.

The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in field inspection, materials testing, and construction management, along with a deep understanding of industry standards and state and federal regulations. In this position, the candidate will:
  • Serve as the resident project representative or project supervisor on small and large projects of varying complexity.
  • Work closely with contractors throughout all phases of construction and maintain strong working relationships with project owners, keeping them informed of significant issues.
  • Supervise construction inspectors and other personnel assigned to the project.
  • Coordinate and lead pre construction meetings, progress meetings, pre final inspections, and other required project meetings.
  • Interpret plans, specifications, and construction methods for inspectors and contractors.
  • Oversee construction engineering layout work, measurements, and verification of planned elevations.
  • Supervise sampling, testing, and inspection of materials to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Manage all aspects of construction processes on assigned projects.
  • Recommend revisions to plans, specifications, or special provisions based on field conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Prepare progress and final estimates, project accounting, records, receipts, change orders, and related reports.
  • Oversee utility relocation work to ensure compatibility with proposed plans.
  • Perform related surveying or design work as needed.
  • Assist with client management and proposal development.
  • Participate in project meetings with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, quality standards, and ethical practices on construction sites.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management or a related field. (Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.)
  • Thorough knowledge of civil engineering principles related to highways, roads, bridges, sewers, and other infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations governing transportation and utility construction.
  • Strong understanding of specifications, standards, and special provisions.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to plan and implement programs.
  • Solid understanding of mathematics, trigonometry, and geometry.
  • Ability to prepare and review designs and make sound technical and managerial decisions.
  • Proficiency with DOT record management software (if applicable).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with contractors, project owners, and internal teams.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and interpret guidelines to address project specific situations.
Work Environment & Expectations:
  • Work is primarily performed outdoors at project sites in all weather conditions.
  • Physical activity may include lifting, carrying, walking, digging, and use of hand tools.
  • Must pass all required inspection, sampling, and certification tests after employment.
  • Reliable transportation and an appropriate personal vehicle are required for travel to project sites.
  • Occasional office work may involve prolonged sitting or standing, computer use, and document review.
  • Work is reviewed by supervisors for compliance with objectives, policies, and standards.
  • Frequent interaction with contractors, project owners, material producers, and internal staff is essential.
