Job description

We are seeking a driven Project Engineer to support the successful delivery of large-scale commercial electrical construction projects throughout the Detroit metropolitan area. This role is ideal for someone with experience in commercial construction or electrical contracting who is looking to grow into an Assistant Project Manager and ultimately a Project Manager position.

Working alongside experienced Project Managers, Superintendents, and field teams, you'll gain hands-on experience in every phase of the project lifecycle-from preconstruction and procurement through closeout. You'll assist with project coordination, scheduling, document control, cost tracking, BIM/VDC coordination, and field operations while helping ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget.

Projects include complex commercial facilities such as healthcare campuses, hospitals, universities, industrial facilities, institutional buildings, and other large-scale developments.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of commercial electrical construction projects from kickoff through closeout.
  • Prepare and manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, transmittals, procurement logs, and project documentation.
  • Review electrical drawings, specifications, contracts, schedules, and scopes of work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, subcontractors, suppliers, vendors, and general contractors.
  • Track material procurement, equipment deliveries, long-lead items, and project milestones.
  • Support project scheduling, budgeting, cost tracking, forecasting, billing, and financial reporting.
  • Participate in project meetings, site visits, and coordination meetings to monitor progress and resolve issues.
  • Collaborate with BIM/VDC teams to identify coordination conflicts and support efficient installation planning.
  • Maintain organized project records, correspondence, meeting minutes, and document control systems.
  • Assist with material takeoffs, procurement planning, and project logistics.
  • Help resolve field issues, scheduling conflicts, procurement challenges, and coordination concerns.
  • Support change order pricing, documentation, and project forecasting.
  • Work closely with field leadership to ensure crews have the drawings, materials, and information needed to maintain productivity.
  • Assist with commissioning, punch list completion, project turnover, and final closeout activities.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in commercial construction, project engineering, or electrical construction.
  • Experience working for an electrical contractor, specialty contractor, or commercial subcontractor preferred.
  • Basic understanding of commercial electrical systems, construction methods, and field operations.
  • Familiarity with RFIs, submittals, change orders, procurement, scheduling, and construction documentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, electrical plans, specifications, contracts, and project schedules.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Comfortable working with both office personnel and field teams.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites throughout the Detroit metropolitan area.
  • Experience on healthcare, higher education, industrial, or other complex commercial construction projects is a plus.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities.
  • Comprehensive health benefits.
  • Retirement savings plan with company contributions.
  • Paid time off and company holidays.
  • Vehicle allowance (where applicable).
  • Ongoing professional development and technical training.
  • Structured career advancement into Assistant Project Manager and Project Manager roles.
  • Mentorship from experienced electrical construction professionals.
  • Exposure to estimating, BIM/VDC, project management, and field operations.
  • Opportunity to work on large, technically challenging commercial electrical projects.
  • Long-term career growth with a stable and expanding electrical contractor.
