Description
Job Title: Upward Bound Summer Instructor (Subjects include Calculus, Pre-calculus, Emotional Wellness, Interdisciplinary Science, Anatomy & Physiology, Social Science, Music, Poetry, Language)
Department: Upward Bound
Reports to: Assistant Director of Upward Bound
Status --non-exempt

Hours: Monday to Thursday: Hours: varies between 9am-4:30pm

Position purpose
The instructor is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. An instructor performs all other duties as directed by program supervisor.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks
  1. teach classes with content aligned to New York State Education Department standards;
  2. coordinate, plan, organize, and instruct courses;
  3. keep active at a high level of expertise in the subjects taught and stimulate enthusiasm for those subjects;
  4. ensure that each program/class contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and maintains currency;
  5. keep students informed and updated concerning course content, requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements;
  6. keep students informed about their progress through the prompt grading of assignments;
  7. maintain accurate and complete records, including attendance records;
  8. ensure that assigned classes and tutoring sessions are held as scheduled;
  9. make suggestions to the program director concerning the improvement of the curriculum in keeping with the objectives of the program;
  10. participate in program and curriculum review and development and student learning outcomes initiatives;
  11. study and utilize students' learning styles in each class in order to facilitate the best teaching and learning situations;
  12. incorporate instructional technologies in instructional delivery;
  13. maximize the learning opportunities for each student;
  14. refer students to counselors as needed.

Education and/or Experience Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in education or field related to subject taught.

Professional Skills
  • Mastery of subject(s) taught;
  • Written and verbal communication and presentation skills are needed;
  • Ability to work with low-income and first-generation students;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, D2L (or similar learning management system), and Zoom (or similar distance video conferencing software).
  • Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to communicate with students, school officials, parents and staff;
  • Ability to understand and follow directions;
  • Ability to resolve conflict among students;
  • Ability to understand the varying backgrounds and culture of NYC public high schools and students.

Work environment and physical functions
This position is located in office and classroom environments. Generally, an employee needs to be able to sit, stand, and navigate within the office area. The office equipment either individually used or shared with a department is the responsibility of all employees.
Compensation
The compensation for this position is expected to be paid by stipend, dependent on the level of education earned by the instructor:
  • Bachelor's degree: $1400
  • Masters degree: $1900
  • PhD: $2400
