Job description

PeaceHealth is seeking a Ophthalmic Technician Certified for a Full Time, 1.00 FTE, Day position.
The salary range for this job opening at PeaceHealth is $31.17 - $42.09. A Hiring Bonus may be available for this position.
The hiring rate is dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to education, training, work experience, terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement, seniority, etc.
Job Summary
Responsible for assisting the Ophthalmologist or Optometrist in providing office based patient care and performing ophthalmic clinical duties as directed including various testing, instilling medications, order processing, and documentation in the electronic medical record. Independently performs certain patient testing within scope of practice.
Details of the Position
  • Room patients; obtain ocular, medical and family history; instruct patients regarding medications, tests and procedures; coordinate patient flow; and update patient's electronic medical record.
  • Perform testing as required and/or directed including measurement of visual acuity, visual fields, extraocular motions, intraocular pressure by applanation tonometry, and pinhole acuity; measure, compare and test pupils; and refraction as necessary.
  • Record data as testing is performed and for physician during visit as scribe in the electronic medical record. Enter and process referrals and authorizations in the electronic medical record.
  • Independently perform intraocular pressure, visual field and visual acuity testing.
  • Prepare exam rooms. Room stocking, maintaining inventory of supplies.
  • Contact lens dispensing, instill ocular medications, participate in telephone triage as necessary.
  • Educate patient on eye care and contact lens care. May educate patient on surgical procedures as appropriate/required.
  • Perform dictation/faxing/phone calls and other related clerical tasks.
  • Process all associated coding, documentation, charting and referrals.
  • Sterile processing of surgical instruments and diagnostic lenses.
  • May complete scribe and/or optical duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You Bring
  • Accredited Program Required: Ophthalmic Technician in process or Completion or schedule to take or already passed JCAHPO COT level

  • Minimum of 1 year Preferred: Experience in an office based ophthalmology practice

  • Required: within 12 months Certified Ophthalmic Technician and
  • Required: Upon Hire Basic Life Support

PHMG Eye Care - Vancouver:
  • MA-R (Medical Assistant Registered-Washington) required within 120 days of hire. (clinic applies for upon hire)

Working Conditions
  • Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices (NIOSH).
  • Ability to move around area.
  • Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment.
  • Lift/Carry: Occasionally up to 25 lbs.
  • Push/Pull: Frequently up to 13 lbs. force. Occasionally up to 30 lbs. force.
  • Reaching frequently.

  • Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
  • Time spent on site in medical/hospital setting.

  • Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
