Job description

Overview

As a Behavioral Health Clinician (BHC), you will work in an independent clinical role providing behavioral health interventions to patients within the Legacy Health Weight and Diabetes Institute.

You will be a fully integrated member of the clinical provider team, helping address a broad spectrum of behavioral health treatment needs for patients. Your goal will be to provide early identification and diagnosis, along with solution-focused interventions that promote wellness and long-term prevention. You will serve as an active consultant to medical providers, nurses, clinical pharmacists, care management, and other members of the care team, supporting highly effective and compassionate care for all patients, with an emphasis on the most complex and marginalized individuals.

A primary focus of this role will be assessing, evaluating, diagnosing, and treating emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems or disorders affecting Weight and Diabetes Institute patients. You will also perform psychological assessments to evaluate patient readiness for weight loss surgery and assist patients with weight loss interventions.

Responsibilities

As a Behavioral Health Clinician, you will:

  • Assess, evaluate, diagnose, and treat emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems or disorders affecting Weight and Diabetes Institute patients.
  • Perform psychological assessments to evaluate patient readiness for weight loss surgery.
  • Provide behavioral health interventions to assist patients with weight loss and lifestyle changes.
  • Serve as a fully integrated member of the multidisciplinary clinical provider team.
  • Act as an active consultant and resource to medical providers, nurses, clinical pharmacists, care management, and other members of the care team.
  • Provide guidance to team members regarding the management of emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and family system problems.
  • Facilitate group programs designed to assist patients with lifestyle interventions and emotional issues related to weight loss.
  • Assist with patient support group facilitation.
  • Participate in research activities in collaboration with Legacy Research and studies conducted by Bariatric Surgeons.
  • Follow established department, program, organizational, and professional standards.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Doctor of Psychology (PhD or PsyD) in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.

Experience:

  • Two years of outpatient experience with an emphasis on eating disorders and obesity.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the nature and mechanics of bariatric surgical procedures and their postoperative course, the physiological effects of morbid obesity and dieting, as well as a basic knowledge of the psychology of eating and morbid obesity.
  • Requires a thorough understanding of the psychosocial, financial, and physical stresses imposed on the patient with morbid obesity and current views on how certain psychosocial factors may affect surgical outcome. 

Skills:

  • Demonstrated competencies in assessment and treatment of emotional, cognitive and behavioral disorders in child, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patients (depending upon population served by specific position). 
  • Demonstrated competency in assessment and treatment of cognitive and psychological problems secondary to, associated with, and/or exacerbating medical conditions.
Licensure
  • Current licensure as a psychologist by the applicable State Board of Psychologist Examiners.
