Job description

About Jerritt Canyon
The Jerritt Canyon deposit was discovered in 1972, and the first gold production from the property occurred in 1981. The Jerritt Canyon property contains 30,821 hectares of mining claims located in the mining-friendly state of Nevada. First Majestic acquired the Jerritt Canyon Gold Mine from Sprott Mining Inc. on April 30, 2021. In May 2023, operations were suspended to prioritize exploration and technical studies. Jerritt Canyon is now entering a new phase of evaluation and planning, requiring substantial technical support to advance the work necessary for a potential future restart of operations.
The Opportunity
The Underground Mobile Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of underground mobile mining equipment in a gold mining operation. This position performs preventative and corrective maintenance on diesel-powered mobile equipment and supporting systems to maximize equipment availability and minimize downtime.
The successful candidate will have strong mechanical and diagnostic skills, a commitment to workplace safety, and the ability to work effectively in an underground mining environment.
Responsibilities
  • Perform preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on underground mobile mining equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and drivetrain systems.
  • Maintain and repair equipment such as underground loaders, haul trucks, bolters, jumbos, utility vehicles, service trucks, personnel carriers, and other mobile mining equipment.
  • Troubleshoot diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, axles, braking systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, and hydraulic circuits.
  • Conduct inspections and identify equipment defects, safety concerns, and potential failures before they result in unplanned downtime.
  • Complete scheduled maintenance, component replacements, rebuilds, and major repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications and site maintenance standards.
  • Use diagnostic tools, service manuals, schematics, and technical documentation to identify and resolve equipment problems.
  • Perform equipment testing and commissioning following repairs to verify safe and proper operation.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, inspection reports, and parts usage information.
  • Communicate equipment condition, outstanding repairs, and maintenance requirements to supervisors and other members of the maintenance team.
  • Work closely with Operations to prioritize equipment repairs and support production requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained.
  • Follow all mine safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, ground-control procedures, and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, training programs, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
  • Respond to underground equipment breakdowns and perform field repairs when required.
  • Assist with equipment rebuilds, component change-outs, and planned shutdown maintenance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, maintenance practices, and operating efficiency.
  • Perform other duties related to underground mobile equipment maintenance as assigned.

The above duties and responsibilities represent the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical, vocational, or trade-school education in Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanics, Heavy Equipment Technology, Automotive Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Completion of a recognized Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic apprenticeship or equivalent trade qualification is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience maintaining and repairing heavy mobile equipment, preferably in an underground mining environment.
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and repairing diesel-powered heavy equipment.
  • Experience with underground mining equipment such as loaders, haul trucks, development equipment, bolters, jumbos, utility vehicles, or similar equipment is highly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, drivetrain, braking, and diesel engine systems.
  • Experience using computerized diagnostic equipment and electronic service information systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret hydraulic schematics, electrical wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and equipment service documentation.
  • Experience performing preventative maintenance, component change-outs, inspections, and equipment rebuilds.
  • Previous experience working in a safety-critical industrial or mining environment preferred.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and as part of a multidisciplinary maintenance team.
  • Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
  • Ability to work underground in confined spaces and challenging environmental conditions.
  • Physically capable of performing the essential duties of the position, including lifting, climbing, bending, kneeling, and working around heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, extended shifts, weekends, holidays, and/or overtime as required by the mine schedule.
  • Valid driver's license or site-equivalent authorization, as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required mine-site certifications and training.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
