How much do assistant mass properties engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for assistant mass properties engineer in the United States is $88,754.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $70,500.00 and $104,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum engineering, aerospace engineering, or senior roles in management can earn $500,000 or more annually. These positions often require advanced skills, extensive experience, and sometimes leadership responsibilities or working in high-cost-of-living regions.

What are some common challenges faced by an Assistant Mass Properties Engineer in the aerospace industry?

Assistant Mass Properties Engineers often face the challenge of balancing strict weight, center of gravity, and balance requirements while collaborating with multiple engineering disciplines. They must ensure that all components meet mass targets without compromising structural integrity or performance. Additionally, working with evolving design data and integrating feedback from testing can require adaptability and strong communication skills. Staying organized and detail-oriented is crucial to manage the large volumes of data and frequent design changes typical in this role.

What are Assistant Mass Properties Engineers?

Assistant Mass Properties Engineers are entry-level professionals who support the analysis, calculation, and management of mass properties—such as weight, center of gravity, and moments of inertia—of vehicles like aircraft, spacecraft, or ships. They work alongside senior engineers to ensure that the design meets performance, safety, and regulatory requirements. Their responsibilities often include collecting data, performing calculations using specialized software, preparing reports, and assisting in the integration of mass properties considerations throughout the design and manufacturing processes.

Can you make $500,000 as a civil engineer?

As an Assistant Mass Properties Engineer, earning $500,000 annually is uncommon, as this salary level typically exceeds entry-level and mid-career ranges for most engineering roles. High salaries in civil engineering are usually associated with senior positions, specialized consulting, or executive roles, often requiring extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Mass Properties Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Mass Properties Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, with proficiency in physics, mathematics, and analytical problem-solving. Familiarity with industry-standard software tools like CATIA, NX, or MATLAB, as well as knowledge of mass property analysis techniques, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective teamwork, and clear communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure accurate calculations, effective collaboration with design teams, and the successful integration of mass properties into complex engineering projects.

What does a mass properties engineer do?

A mass properties engineer analyzes and calculates the weight, center of gravity, and moments of inertia of aerospace or mechanical components to ensure proper balance and performance. They use specialized software and measurement tools to gather data and verify design specifications, often working closely with design and manufacturing teams. Their work helps optimize safety, efficiency, and structural integrity of the final product.

What is the difference between Assistant Mass Properties Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectAssistant Mass Properties EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, relevant certificationsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, design certifications
Work EnvironmentEngineering teams, labs, aerospace or automotive industriesDesign offices, manufacturing plants, product development
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, automotive, and defense sectorsManufacturing, product design, engineering firms
Common Search & ComparisonYesNo

The Assistant Mass Properties Engineer focuses on analyzing and calculating the mass properties of aerospace or automotive components, supporting design and safety assessments. In contrast, a Mechanical Design Engineer primarily develops and tests mechanical systems and products. While both roles require engineering credentials and work within similar industries, their core responsibilities differ—one emphasizes mass property analysis, the other product design.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced certifications, or leadership roles. High-level positions often involve management responsibilities, complex projects, and working in competitive industries or high-cost-of-living areas.

Job description

Staff/Senior Mass Properties Engineer

About Electra

At Electra, we're building the EL9 - a nine-passenger, hybrid-electric aircraft that takes off and lands in 150 feet. Our Ultra Short technology unlocks thousands of new operating locations and enables what we call Direct Aviation: quiet, point-to-point regional travel that gets people from where they are to where they want to go, without the congestion of major airports or the noise of conventional aviation.

A global company, headquartered in Manassas, VA, Electra is backed by Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, and Safran, has filed for FAA Part 23 type certification, and carries 2,000+ intent to purchase from operators worldwide. We're a team of ~100 people moving fast toward first EL9 test flights in 2027 and certification by late 2029 or 2030. Every hire matter at this stage - and this role is no exception.

The Role

Electra is seeking a Staff/Senior Mass Properties Engineer to support the development of our EL9 Ultra Short aircraft. This is an incredible opportunity to make a direct impact on a cutting-edge development program.

What You'll Do

  • Support the mass properties control and management execution across for the EL9 program.
  • Conduct advanced design weight estimation to develop preliminary weight estimates to support advanced design proposals, prototyping efforts, trade studies, etc.
  • Develop current and forecasted weight, balance, and mass properties data.
  • Perform estimation, calculation, and measurement/verification of mass, center of gravity, and inertias of components, assemblies and completed systems.
  • Develop mass properties processes and tools to be implemented across Electra.
  • Coordinate with SMEs across the program to understand weight impacts of design decisions.
  • Support the development and presentation of weight status or technical data to design teams and program leadership.
  • Review and support detail and installation drawing release processes.
  • Work under minimal direction.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills and enjoys working in a team environment.

What You Bring

  • B.S. in STEM discipline.
  • 5- 10 years of mass properties experience.
  • Experience with applicable industry recommended mass properties practices.
  • A strong work ethic and ability to independently execute the areas described by the responsibilities and essential functions.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Bonus Points

  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience with 3D solid modeling software applications (preferably NX) and product data management tools (TeamCenter).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), certification procedures (especially Part 23), and relevant industry standards.
  • US Person Preferred.

Leveling Expectations

Level (Staff or Senior) will be determined based on the candidate's experience, education, demonstrated skills, and degree of independence and autonomy.

Both levels require a strong foundation in engineering principles and the ability to solve complex technical problems. Differentiation between levels is based on degree of ownership, autonomy, and influence.

Staff Engineer (5+ years)

  • Experienced with frequent application of technical standards, principles, and theories
  • Works under general supervision to solve technical problems of moderate scope and complexity
  • Executes defined scope of work with growing independence
