What is an afternoon mass properties engineer?

An Afternoon Mass Properties Engineer is a professional who specializes in analyzing and managing the mass properties—such as weight, center of gravity, and moments of inertia—of vehicles or structures, typically within the aerospace or automotive industries. The 'afternoon' designation may refer to the shift or work hours assigned to the engineer, indicating they work during the afternoon or evening. Their responsibilities include ensuring that a vehicle's mass distribution meets design and safety requirements, supporting design changes, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to optimize performance. Accurate mass properties data is critical for the safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance of complex systems.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by an afternoon mass properties engineer?

As an Afternoon Mass Properties Engineer, your main responsibility is to analyze and manage the weight, balance, and distribution of mass within aerospace vehicles during the afternoon shift. You will work closely with design, manufacturing, and testing teams to ensure that all components meet performance and safety requirements. A key challenge in this role is coordinating with cross-functional teams to obtain accurate data and accommodate late-stage design changes. The afternoon shift may also require independent decision-making and strong communication skills to relay progress and issues to colleagues on other shifts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an afternoon mass properties engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Afternoon Mass Properties Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, with expertise in weight estimation, balance analysis, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, mass properties analysis tools (such as CATIA or Teamcenter), and industry standards is typically required. Outstanding attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure precise mass properties management, which is crucial for safety, performance, and regulatory compliance in engineering projects.

Job Title: Mass Properties Engineer

Job Description

The Mass Properties Engineer researches, designs, develops, tests, certifies, deploys, and supports cutting-edge aerospace products and services. The role spans a wide range of applications, from state-of-the-art mission payloads and electronic systems to highly integrated aircraft and orbital and space exploration systems. You will be responsible for developing complex aerodynamic components, structures, and systems, and leading the design, analysis, and testing of new products and processes throughout the product lifecycle, with a specific focus on mass properties engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed mass properties calculations and analyses for aerospace components and systems across the full product lifecycle.
  • Develop, maintain, and update mass properties models and databases to ensure accurate and current configuration data.
  • Conduct and oversee mass properties testing and validation activities to confirm performance and compliance with requirements.
  • Inventory and weigh aircraft and maintain accurate weight and balance documentation and paperwork.
  • Collaborate closely with design and analysis teams to incorporate mass properties data into project workflows and design decisions.
  • Use mass properties simulation tools to predict and optimize weight, balance, and inertia characteristics for aerospace systems.
  • Support certification efforts by providing mass properties data, reports, and technical justification as required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of mass properties processes, tools, and methodologies used across projects.

Essential Skills

  • 2+ years of relevant experience as a Mass Properties Engineer or in a closely related aerospace engineering role for Level II positions.
  • 6+ years of relevant experience in mass properties engineering for high-level positions.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in mass properties calculations for aerospace components and systems.
  • Strong experience in mass properties analysis, including weight, balance, and inertia assessments.
  • Hands-on experience with mass properties modeling and development of analytical and numerical models.
  • Practical experience with mass properties testing and validation in an aerospace environment.
  • Experience with aircraft inventory activities, including weighing and documenting aircraft configurations.
  • Ability to perform and interpret mass properties simulations using appropriate engineering tools.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience with advanced mass properties analysis software and tools.
  • Experience using Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools to support design and analysis work.
  • Knowledge of industry-standard aerospace principles, including parametric design, model-based definition, and fundamentals of flight mechanics.
  • Experience in the aerospace and defense industry, including familiarity with US Department of Defense or US military aerospace programs.

Work Environment

This role operates in both office and aircraft hangar environments. You will work in an office setting for design, analysis, modeling, and documentation tasks, using engineering software, mass properties tools, and CAE applications. You will also spend time in aircraft hangars to support inventory, weighing activities, and hands-on mass properties testing and validation on physical hardware. The work environment combines analytical engineering work with direct interaction with aerospace vehicles and components, offering exposure to real-world aircraft and systems in a professional technical setting.
