Wellstar North Fulton Hospital has an opportunity for a Lab Support Service Specialist 2 - Full-Time Day Shift 7:30am - 4pm


Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, Assistant Manager or Supervisor, performs technical and non-technical duties within the Laboratory service areas on the hospital campus. The LSSS II is fully proficient in their area of expertise and will serve as an expert / lead in their assigned area. Performs all functions that relate to obtaining or processing patient specimens while maintaining customer confidence and satisfaction.
Accuracy: Maintains acceptable accuracy in-patient, quality assurance, proficiency and competency testing.
Critical Thinking: Uses knowledge and experience to evaluate and investigate specimen problems that arise.
Job Knowledge: Maintains current personal training, education and practice of policies and procedures.
Productivity: Practices organizational skills for efficiency of time, materials, cost and availability of lab data
Communication: Practices information monitoring, investigation, resolution and hand-off to team members.
Performs other duties as assigned:


Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:


Performs responsibilities of a Lab Support Services Specialist (May or may not include Phlebotomy):
* Will take on lead duties in the absence of the supervisor or manager.
* Technical / HIS / LIS-Ability to operate in multiple computer systems simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and quality.
* Customer Service Support-Communicates effectively and courteously with all customers while maintaining privacy and confidentiality at all times.
* Specimen receipt and processing-Handle all patient specimens appropriately for tests indicated.
* Phlebotomy- Maintain Phlebotomy competency if appropriate for the department working in.
* Education and training for new employees-Responsible for assisting in orientation and training of new staff for the department.
Modular Pre-Analytics System and Storage Unit (if Required)
* Key Operator for the Pre-Analytics and Storage Unit
* Monitors and identifies system monitor functions
* Thorough knowledge of Pre-Analytics computer functions and specimen location
* Thorough knowledge of each Pre-Analytics module and their function
* Responsible for performing daily maintenance for Pre-Analytics module and all components
* Complete understanding of processes for the Pre-Analytics module
* Possess the ability to trouble shoot errors or problems for the Pre-Analytics and storage unit.
* Follows up with contacting service for further instructions.
* Thorough knowledge of loading and off-loading samples for the Pre-Analytics and storage unit.
Outpatient Registration (if Required)
* Check all lab orders (electronic or manual) for accuracy and completion of diagnosis code and print ABN if required. Follows all Medicare regulations for testing eligibility.
* Ensures accurate information is captured in multiple registration systems (Wellstar HIS)
* Order test(s) in computer system and follows special procedures for test reporting requirements. Collaborates with physician and office staff to ensure accuracy.
* Ensures activity is recorded
* Ensures all stats are sent to the laboratory within time guidelines.
Microbiology Processing (if Required)
* Performs all aspects of specimen processing including reporting and resolving specimen problems
* Prepares media and supplies for transfer to sister hospitals as needed.
* Serves as expert for ordering and processing Microbiology specimens. Follows up with and is the contact for processors at sister hospitals
* Maintains and sets up organisms for media QC
* Key Operator for the appropriate instrumentation
* Weekly and monthly maintenance of processing equipment (centrifuges, stainer, cytofuge)
* Trains new employees on processing duties
* Sets up all proficiency specimens
Blood Bank Component Processing (if Required)
* Works independently preparing products for transfusion medicine, maintaining blood bank equipment, answering calls related to patient care. Prepares all products using good lab technique and adheres to established procedures.
* Performs all routine preparation and issuing of products per protocol.
* Performs all lab supplementary tasks for maintenance, safety, logs all required activities to track workload, work in progress, pending logs and amended information.
* Effectively communicates all information to appropriate personnel as required by policy and procedure. Participates in shift to shift hand-off communication.
* Uses LIS and HIS when needed to perform job duties, as resources, and to assist in moving specimens within blood bank.
* Perform STAT duties as needed. Handle emergency products efficiently and appropriately

Complies with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

  • High School Diploma / GED General

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):


All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

  • BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - Amer Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor
Additional License(s) and Certification(s):
Required Minimum Experience:


Minimum 3 years experience in specimen processing in an outpatient or hospital laboratory environment Required


Required Minimum Skills:


Strong written and verbal communication, customer service, multi-tasking and organizational skills, professionalism, detail and team-oriented, data entry and computer proficiency.
Demonstrates leadership in area of expertise.
