Job description

JOB SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant/Lab Tech, under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, provides a variety of medical and clerical duties associated with patient care.ย  The incumbent maintains a pleasant, courteous and cooperative manner with patients, visitors and Center's personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Maintains confidentiality at all times.

2.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Work up patients and record vital signs, weights and chief complaints on progress notes at each visit.

3.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Assist patients in exam rooms.ย  Assist nurses and/or provider with procedures and treatments..

4.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Maintain and organize supplies in the supply room.ย  Keep exam room stocked and organized at all times.

5.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Maintain up-to-date CPR Certification and submit a copy of CPR card to the personnel department.ย 

6.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Participate in the nurse training sessions, maintain CEU's as required by the State Nurses Licensure Board.

7.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Rotates to other units and departments (i.e., front desk, x-ray, laboratory, etc.) when deemed necessary by immediate supervisor or Director of Nursing.

8. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Ensures completion of referrals, and other orders such as diagnostic testing, labs etcโ€ฆ

9.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Maintains compliance with regulatory standards such as Joint Commission, OSV, NCQA by maintaining compliance with policies and procedures related to clinical area.

10. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Participates in quality initiatives and gap closures using the EHR and Azara huddle reports on a daily basis

11.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Any other duties as assigned.

ยฃย  LAB TECHNICIAN: (Check if applicable)

  1. Make sure all lab results are on charts before giving chart to health care provider.
  2. Assist nurses with mailing of correspondences to patients for abnormal lab and missed appointments and document actions in patient's medical record
  3. Performs routine lab procedures such as but not limited to: Wet Mount, KOH, Micro-Urine, Strep A, Hematocrit, Glucose, Urine Dip, Urine HCG, Hemocult, etc.
  4. Performs phlebotomy.
  5. Performs and documents quality controls.
  6. Monitor inventory levels and reorder supplies as needed.
  7. Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
  8. Responsible for specimen processing, test performance and reporting test results.
  9. Notifies provider of pertinent results.
  10. Maintains proper records.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

ยฃย  Immunizations: (Check if applicable)

  1. ย ย ย ย ย ย Follow the recommendations for storage, handling and administration found in each vaccineโ€™s package insert.
  2. ย ย ย ย ย ย Responsible for maintaining inventory of vaccines, clerical and clinical supplies to ensure efficient and effective operation.
  3. ย ย ย ย ย ย Provide and/or assist with injections/immunizations and supporting data, providing nurse-directed immunization education and ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย information to patients as appropriate.
  4. ย ย ย ย ย ย Update the EHR systems to assure immunization compliance.ย

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide front desk support as the need arises.
  2. Answers telephone and give information to callers, screens and route calls to appropriate destination in a courteous, professional, and efficient manner.ย  Obtains and records caller's name, time of call, nature of business, and person called upon.ย  Retrieve patient charts for office visits, doctors' or nurses' telephone calls requiring patient's information.
  3. Keeps client records accurately identified.ย 
  4. Checks charts daily for incomplete histories and brings same to the attention of the appropriate member of the health care team for correction.

PRIVACY RULE COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS: ย 

  1. Adheres to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA Privacy Rule) policies and procedures.
  2. Must successfully complete Privacy Rule compliance training annually or as revisions are made to the policies and procedures.
  3. Must comply with Privacy Rule guidelines by learning to protect FPHC patientโ€™s medical privacy.
  4. Must comply with Privacy Rule guidelines by appropriately maintaining our patient information in compliance with national standards.

5.ย ย ย  Must comply with Privacy Rule guidelines by providing appropriate security of FPHC patient records

HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:ย ย ย  The health and safety requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  1. Must adhere to safety regulations, personnel policies and procedures.
  2. Safety and Hazard Communication training update is required annually.
  3. Knowledgeable of OSHA and CLIA requirements to assure compliance.
  4. Maintain yearly health maintenance records by obtaining TB skin testing and completion of the hepatitis series.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:ย  High school graduate or GED equivalent.ย  Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant Program with emphasis on Laboratory procedures or an equivalent combination of training, education and work experience relative to the position.ย  Must have pleasant personality, good telephone etiquette and public relations skills.ย  One or more years work experience in medical setting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:ย  Requires knowledge of the field of assignment sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of responsibility as illustrated by example in the above job description.ย  Requires human relations skills to deal effectively with patients/visitors in person or via telephone.ย  Must have keyboard experience and have knowledge in medical records.ย ย  Basic ability to operate lab equipment, multi-line telephone, copier, adding machine, fax machine and other office equipment.
