Job Description:
Position Summary
The Hydrovac Operator is responsible for operating Hydrovac trucks to safely and efficiently excavate soil and expose underground utilities using high-pressure water and vacuum systems. This role supports field operations by using pressurized water and a vacuum system to expose underground utilities and structures, ensuring safety and minimal disruption. The position works closely with project teams and reports to the department manager.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Operate Hydrovac truck and equipment to perform non-destructive excavation and utility locating
  • Safely daylight around underground utilities in accordance with OSHA and company safety standards
  • Operate Trimble and GPS equipment to record utilities as necessary
  • Locate utilities with a locator wand utilizing tracer wires and other conductive materials in the ground.
  • Locate utilities with GPR scanning equipment as required.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections and routine maintenance of equipment
  • Complete required logs and reports to document work performed and site conditions
  • Maintain a clean and organized vehicle and work area
  • Communicate with site supervisors, team members, and vendors to coordinate tasks
  • Participate in job hazard analysis (JHA), site-specific safety plans, and morning action planning (MAP)
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with vacuum excavation equipment
  • Good manual dexterity to operate machinery with precision
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift objects up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and follow detailed instructions
  • Experience in construction or excavation is preferred

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake & tanker endorsement
  • Clean driving record
