Job Description
YMCA Camp Carter is seeking a dedicated and team-oriented Chef's Assistant to join our Food Service team. This part-time position supports the Food Service Manager in preparing and serving meals for overnight camp, day camp, groups, retreats, events, and other rental programs on our 360-acre property.
The Chef's Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring that guests enjoy nutritious, delicious meals in a safe, clean, and welcoming dining environment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys cooking, working with people, and being part of a mission-driven organization.
This role will provide you with hands-on training, apprenticeship, and coaching from a professional chef to help grow your skillsets and knowledge in food service and kitchen management.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the Food Service Manager in planning, preparing, and serving meals for groups of various sizes.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized kitchen and dining hall environment.
  • Support in ordering, receiving, and storing food and supplies.
  • Ensure proper food handling, storage, and sanitation practices in compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Supervise and assist kitchen volunteers or support staff as needed.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all guests, ensuring positive dining experiences.
  • Work as part of the Food Service team to support the overall mission of YMCA Camp Carter.

Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Previous cooking or food service experience required; camp, institutional, or large-group cooking preferred.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods of time.
  • ServSafe Certification or willingness to obtain (YMCA can provide training if needed).
