What We Do
Dynamic Ratings is an ISO-certified company dedicated to providing monitoring, control, and communication solutions for our customers in the utility industry. We provide condition-based monitoring products and services to reduce outages, increase safety, and gain visibility of electrical equipment throughout the power grid, serving industries and communities worldwide.
Our systems combine custom hardware, PCB assemblies, embedded firmware, embedded Linux devices, C/C++ applications, data analytics, and software tools to help utilities monitor and improve critical power-network assets.
The Role
We are seeking a hands-on QA Test Team Lead to lead quality engineering and testing in Sussex, WI. In this role you will lead a small global QA/Test team supporting development, testing, release, and ongoing support of Dynamic Ratings' industrial embedded systems and software products.
The successful candidate combines practical team leadership with strong technical testing experience, working with hardware, firmware, embedded Linux, C/C++ application and frontend developers, plus product owners, project managers, production, field service, and technical support.
This is not a pure management role. The right person will lead people, improve test processes, review release readiness, troubleshoot complex issues, and help test hardware/software products.
What You'll Do
  • Lead, coach, and support the QA/Test team across priorities, workload planning, technical guidance, and professional development.
  • Plan and coordinate testing for embedded systems, hardware, firmware, embedded Linux applications, C/C++ software, and user-facing software tools.
  • Design, review, and execute test plans, cases, and scripts for new and existing products.
  • Support manual, automated, functional, integration, system, regression, performance, reliability, and usability testing.
  • Work early with development teams to clarify requirements, acceptance criteria, testability, and release risks.
  • Review defects, test results, unresolved issues, and quality metrics for release readiness.
  • Improve automated testing, regression coverage, test fixtures, documentation, and CI practices.
  • Assist hardware troubleshooting, including reading schematics and using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and related tools.
  • Act as third-level support for complex issues from Technical Support, Field Service, Production, Application Engineering, Sales, or customers.
  • Reproduce, isolate, document, and triage customer issues into defects, corrective actions, documentation updates, or product improvements.
  • Participate in design reviews, sprint and release planning, corrective actions, engineering changes, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Occasional travel may be required for product investigations, customer support, installations, vendor visits, training, or industry events.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Software Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or coordinating a QA/test team.
  • Strong experience testing embedded systems, industrial electronics, integrated hardware/software products, or complex technical software.
  • Experience with both manual and automated testing.
  • Solid understanding of QA methods, defect lifecycle management, release and regression testing, and risk-based test planning.
  • Ability to interpret specifications, requirements, hardware schematics, logs, diagnostic outputs, and software behavior.
  • Practical troubleshooting experience across software and hardware systems.
  • Strong communication skills to explain defects, risks, release status, and technical findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preference given to candidates with experience in/with the following:
  • industrial embedded systems, electrical network products, power utility equipment, condition monitoring, protection, control, automation, or similar products.
  • testing embedded Linux, C, C++, firmware, communications interfaces, data acquisition, analytics, alarms, or telemetry products.
  • testing web tools or user interfaces, including JavaScript or React applications.
  • automated test tools or frameworks such as pytest and Playwright.
  • designing, maintaining, or using hardware or production test fixtures, system simulators, or automated lab setups.
  • industrial communication protocols such as Modbus and DNP3.
  • test management and defect tracking tools.
  • ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level or equivalent preferred, ISTQB Advanced Level highly regarded.
