Assistant Guide information

What is an assistant guide?

Assistant guides are individuals who support lead guides in organizing and conducting tours or outdoor activities. They help with group management, safety, logistics, and sharing information with participants. Assistant guides often assist in preparing equipment, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and providing customer service. Their role is vital in enhancing the overall experience for guests and supporting the main guide throughout the activity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant guide?

To thrive as an Assistant Guide, you generally need knowledge of the local environment, basic first aid certification, and experience in outdoor activities relevant to the tours offered. Familiarity with GPS devices, radio communication tools, and booking or scheduling software is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, clear communication, and problem-solving abilities help in managing groups and ensuring guest safety and satisfaction. These competencies are crucial for providing a safe, informative, and enjoyable experience for clients in diverse and sometimes unpredictable outdoor settings.

What are some typical challenges an assistant guide may face during group excursions, and how can they be managed?

Assistant Guides often encounter challenges such as managing diverse group dynamics, ensuring guest safety, and adapting to changing weather or unexpected situations on excursions. Effective communication, strong situational awareness, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential for managing these challenges. Building rapport with guests and maintaining close coordination with the lead guide help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Gaining experience and learning from seasoned guides also prepares Assistant Guides to handle these situations more confidently over time.

Job description

We are now hiring for Summer Camp Teachers for the 2026 Summertime at our lovely Guidepost school at South Beaverton!
Our summer camps run from June to August. We are hiring for both full-time and part-time roles.
Your Role:
In this Summer Camp role, you will support our Lead Teacher in guiding children to be more independent and confident in their abilities.
