Job description

Job Overview:
The Gardener is responsible for ensuring the landscapes and grounds are beautifully presented at Folino Estate Winery. The Gardener applies a standard, as well as specialized horticultural practices including, but not limited to landscape/garden design, weeding, pruning, planting, and watering. The Gardener provides experience, expertise, and professionalism, as a teacher and coach to staff and garden guests alike.
Overall, this position will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the grounds, including designing, and maintaining flower beds and plantings with the outside consultant; planting flowers, bulbs, and small shrubs; preparing and maintaining planters; identifying horticultural problems and treating effectively; scouting and identifying pests and diseases to then apply appropriate treatments.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.
  • 2+ years groundskeeping experience
  • A certification in horticulture or landscaping, preferred
  • Must be a reliable worker who is able to perform routine tasks without supervision
  • Strong attention to detail required
  • Strong verbal communication skills required.

Duties and Responsibilities
Landscaping
  • Manage all key aspects of the development, implementation, and consolidation of the Folino Estate grounds.
  • Perform basic maintenance such as cutting the grass, emptying bins, managing weed control, and leaf raking.
  • Fertilize green spaces.
  • Plant and nurture new trees, flowers, and various plants.
  • Advise management on the costs of plants and garden necessities with detailed written quotations and reports.
  • Fine detail for all aesthetic details for the grounds.
  • Manages and participates in ensuring high standards for the ground's appearance.
  • Cultivation/installation and maintenance of annuals and perennials.
  • Familiar with pests and diseases of common landscape plants.
  • Seasonally decorate and update planters, including going to the auction for items.
  • Assist the Grounds Maintenance Manager as needed, including in winter months when landscaping and garden work is minimal.

Vegetable and Fruit Garden
  • Research and apply for grants to install a greenhouse, develop a plan and see a project through to completion.
  • Maintain and grow the garden to ensure it meets specific requirements and expectations.
  • Monitor and maintain the health of plants.
  • Deal with pest problems that could damage plants, in compliance with food safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with the Kitchen Manager and Operations Manager on new menu items in time to effectively grow and maintain vegetables for the kitchen to use and serve guests.
  • Coordinate fruit growth to accommodate monthly sangria options.
  • Provide guidance to management on matters related to the garden.
  • Ensure a safe environment for staff and clients by adhering to safety and health regulations.
  • Maintain a clean garden by clearing debris and litter from the garden and grounds.

Travel and Tours
  • Ensuring other locations are seasonally decorated and have updated planters, travel required
  • Provide on-site tours of the gardens, sunflower garden, etc. as requested

  • Costing of plant materials and plants, proactively managing the budget.
  • Tracks and maintains good vegetable production metrics including, consumption vs. waste.
