Literature and Culture: The French-Speaking World

Compensation

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds.

  • Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $23.30per hour.(Rate effective September 1, 2026)

  • Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $36.67per hour.(Rate effective September 1, 2026)

  • In cases whereadditionalduties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant's duties, these hours shall be compensated at theappropriate TeachingAssistant rate.

Duties

The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required.

Qualifications

1. Graduate Degree (PhD, PhDabd) in an area of French studies with a record of sustained successful teaching of second-year languagecourses in French at a University level. Native or near native fluency in English and French. Commitment to and competence in the use ofStandard International French.

2. Teaching documentation: evidence of teaching competence in second-year language courses in French at University level; officialstudent and peer evaluations; teaching dossier; references. Ability to work alone without immediate direct supervision. Ability to workwithin a team; clear comprehension of multi-section teaching; active participation in curriculum development; sharing of responsibilities incareful test preparation; student assessment; prompt andaccuratemarking. Commitment toparticipatein required committee markingincluding online activities,mid-termand final exams.

3. Commitment to the incorporation of web-based pedagogical techniques,materialsand resources (including textbook instructionalplatform, etc.) in the teaching of the course, asrequired. Competence in the use of email, Brightspace, internet, common office software(e.g., Word, Excel) and multi-media equipment.

4. Commitment to responsible time management (e.g., course structuring, punctuality for lectures). Availability for individual consultationwith students (office hours 1.5 hours per section per weekrequired) and proctoring exams.

Members shall not accept any appointment which, taken together with all other appointments at the University, would cause the member to exceed the maximum number of regular hours (i.e., not overtime hours) allowable in a work week under the Employment Standards Act, as amended from time to time.
