Job description

Job Summary

The Emergency Response Supervisor supports daily terminal safety activities, including responding to fires, spills, rescues, and life-safety concerns. The role conducts daily fire equipment checks, assists with emergency response training and confined space entry support, and maintains response equipment and required records. This position follows OSHA, NFPA, and EPA guidelines, provides routine guidance to emergency response team members, and helps ensure fire protection coverage when the Fire Chief is unavailable.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to everyday activities concerning chemical handling, PPE, and general terminal Emergency Management issues; including firefighting, spills, and rescues as well as responding to employee concerns and issues for life safety.
  • Maintain and ensure daily check of all fire equipment at the start of each workday. He/she will report all shortcomings to the IMTT Fire Chief at the Bayonne terminal.
  • Conduct, facilitate and attend regular emergency response training, drills and meetings on-site and off-site as needed.
  • Maintain records of training, incidents and inspections both digitally and hard copies
  • Coordination and involvement with outside agencies (Local FDs, USCG, OSROs)
  • Development and oversight of monthly/annual training for Fire Department and Emergency Response Team Members
  • Maintain and oversee response equipment, testing, calibrations, and recordkeeping as needed.
  • Assist in confined space entries and confined space entry stand-by as needed.
  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable OSHA, NFPA, DOT and EPA regulations.
  • Reports to Fire Chief for daily operational duties.
  • Supervise facility ERT and maintain fire protection when Fire Chief is absent

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have 5 years' experience responding to municipal and industrial hazmat, fire, and medical emergencies.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Credentials) for access to IMTT's terminal locations
  • Valid CPR/First Aid
  • Haz-Mat Level 3 Technician
  • Experience in industrial facility is preferred.
  • Record of regulatory, health, and safety training

Skills and Abilities

  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills in the English language.
  • Ability to understand written and verbal communication in the English language.
  • Ability to make decisions in a variable environment,
  • Ability to communicate with all other terminal departments.
  • Must be neat, detail oriented, organized, conscientious, and thorough.

Knowledge

  • Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, Advanced flammable liquids firefighting, Emergency Medical Technician, Incident management level 1, Rope Rescue Technician, Knowledge of NFPA and State Fire Code, Fire Official, Fire Instructor, and Fire Inspector. Cross training and experience in other emergency response functions is strongly desired.

Hours of Work

  • This is a non-exempt, hourly position. Employees are scheduled to work assigned shifts within a 24/7 operation, including nights, weekends, and holidays. All hours worked must be accurately recorded, and overtime is paid in accordance with FLSA and company policy.
  • Occasional travel may be necessary, sometimes with little or no advance notice.

Physical and Environmental Demand

  • The large scale of the operation and the extensive layout of the facility require that the applicant can walk and stand on uneven terrain, climb stairs and ladders, and traverse inclines: uphill, downhill, or mixed. Furthermore, because the facilities and adjoining facilities handle hazardous materials, the applicant must be able to ingress and egress in foreseeable emergencies. The applicant must be able to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Must be able to work in a confined space, over water and not be afraid of heights.
  • Ability to wear and use a respirator and any other safety equipment
  • This would require the ability to lift to 75 pounds, bend, stand, or stoop, as necessary.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment is preferred.
  • Equipment used in job performance include company vehicle, fire apparatus, two-way radio, emergency response tools, and safety equipment.
  • Must be able to meet the minimum ERT Physical Requirements
