Summary
The Financial Controller leads day-to-day accounting operations and helps ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of the company's financial reporting. This role reviews transactions and reconciliations, oversees the month-end close, finalizes financial statements, approves monthly billing and weekly payables, supports budgeting and forecasting, and assists the Chief Operating & Financial Officer with financial reporting and analysis. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting expertise with a continuous-improvement mindset to modernize financial systems, processes, tools, and internal controls.
Responsibilities
  • Perform final accuracy review of monthly billing invoices to Smiley's bank clients
  • Present and explain monthly financial results to Chief Operating & Financial Officer, confirming that appropriate internal controls and financial procedures have been applied
  • Ensure payables are completed accurately and timely each week
  • Collaborate on budgetary variance explanations with the management team and participate in detailed collaboration sessions with department managers on various business cases
  • Lead the annual budget process, including analysis of revenue, compensation, non-compensation, and capital expenditure, and assist with loading into the financial system
  • Review bi-weekly payroll entries posted to the general ledger
  • Review and approve accounting functions related to month-end accounting close procedures, including cash reconciliations, journal entry approvals, tax filings, and monthly variance explanations
  • Assist staff accountant(s) with Corporate Credit Card and T&E questions
  • Support staff Accountant(s) in annual Fixed Asset Inventory reviews
  • Review the company's cash position for optimal placement and investment return
  • Support HR in compensation reporting as needed
  • Oversee Annual Corporate Insurance renewals, including information gathering, coverage review support, and price comparisons as needed
  • Manage Stock Option Plan administration, including maintaining equity-related records, coordinating option exercise documentation, and assisting with internal reporting and communications
  • Oversee Vendor Management activities, including Critical vendor reviews, new vendor documentation, termination vendor workflows, and related procurement activities with department leaders
  • Contribute to departmental documentation notes, including updating procedures and accounting policies as appropriate
  • Manage, coach, and develop the staff within the Finance department, while fostering Smiley values throughout the organization and in interactions with clients
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for financial audit questions and support
  • Assist CFO in overall company financial training, including in new hire orientations and management training

Requirements
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance
  • CPA or candidate for CPA (CPA preferred)
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in a finance organization with management experience preferable
  • Advanced experience required with Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to learn and work in accounting software (Sage Intacct is software platform used at company)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate financial information clearly, exercise sound judgment, manage competing priorities, collaborate across departments, and maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive accounting and payroll information
  • Demonstrated ability to assess accounting principles, recommend appropriate application and document conclusions
  • Work in a team environment while maintaining a positive working relationship with co-workers
