Job description

WSP is currently initiating a search for Bridge Inspection Engineer - Assistant Team Leader to work out of our Herndon, VA office. 

This Opportunity

Be involved in projects with our Bridge Inspection Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges. Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector. Tasks may include assistance with the inspection, load rating, load and material testing, and design of bridge repairs. 

Your Impact

  • Perform inspections of bridges and other structures for structural deterioration and public safety issues.
  • Assist with report writing for the inspection work completed in the fields.
  • Assist with planning and preparation of field inspection trips and maintaining field equipment and supplies.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures to ensure work is completed in a correct manner.
  • Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, structural plans, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, flow diagrams, materials sampling, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for field inspection activities.    
  • Provide basic technical assistance that accounts for the proper inspection, construction, and functioning of buildings, highways, roads, bridges, structures, infrastructure, equipment, and/or mechanical systems according to design standard specifications.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals, engineers, inspectors, and technicians on assigned inspection phases, checks, and tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience
  • Ability to read plans and specifications to provide entry-level technical assistance on various bridge inspections and repair designs.
  • Knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, and processes, as well as applicable building codes and standards. 
  • Physically capable of performing field work including climbing ladders (40ft or less) and in close quarters, carrying ladders and gear, working in adverse weather conditions, etc.
  • Familiar with construction inspection principles, field inspection practices, process, methods and techniques.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives with attention to detail.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Proficiency/Comfortable using hand and power tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • The selected candidate must have the ability to work in the United States immediately.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Prior work or internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • Interest in UAS Drone flying.
  • Interest in obtaining rope access (SPRAT) certification.
  • Interest in or understanding of programming and databases.
