What does an Assistant EHS Manager do?

An Assistant EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) Manager supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of workplace safety and environmental programs. They help ensure that organizations comply with all relevant laws and regulations, conduct safety audits, investigate incidents, and provide training to employees. Their role is crucial in promoting a safe and healthy work environment, reducing environmental impact, and preventing workplace injuries or accidents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant EHS Manager?

To thrive as an Assistant EHS Manager, you typically need a background in environmental health and safety, knowledge of regulatory compliance, and a relevant degree such as in environmental science or engineering. Familiarity with EHS management systems, incident reporting software, and certifications like NEBOSH or OSHA are commonly required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills help you effectively implement safety protocols and engage teams. These competencies ensure a safe workplace, regulatory compliance, and the successful promotion of a strong safety culture.

Assistant EHS Managers often encounter resistance to change when introducing new safety protocols, especially from teams with established routines. Clear communication and hands-on training are key to gaining buy-in and ensuring everyone understands the importance and benefits of the changes. Collaborating closely with department leaders and providing ongoing support helps address concerns and facilitates smoother adoption. Additionally, balancing compliance with practical, on-the-ground realities is an ongoing challenge that requires flexibility and problem-solving skills.
