Job description

Fire Protection Engineer - Duke EnergyResponsibilities
  • Serve as the fire protection subject matter expert, ensuring compliance with NFPA codes, regulatory requirements, fleet/site procedures, and plant licensing standards.
  • Provide engineering and field support to identify, analyze, and resolve fire protection program issues.
  • Support Fire PRAs, NSCA updates, surveillance testing, pre-plans, impairment monitoring, and engineering calculations.
  • Prepare for and support NRC, INPO, NEIL, NSRB, and NOS inspections and audits.
  • Monitor fire protection system performance, review engineering changes, respond to industry operating experience, and represent the company professionally.
Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Senior Engineer: Bachelor of Science or master’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program. At least 6 years of engineering experience. Demonstrated ability to complete work with minimal supervision.
  • Engineer III: Bachelor of Science or master’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection from an ABET-accredited program.
  • At least three years of experience in Fire Protection Engineering responsibilities.
  • Nuclear Power Plant experience
  • Registered Professional Engineer
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
  • Reliable, consistent transportation is required to ensure timely arrival at the applicable facility.
  • Work is performed in both office and plant environments, requiring walking, light lifting, occasional climbing, and exposure to temperature, noise, and radiation.
  • The role operates within a procedural and process-oriented structure due to stringent regulatory requirements.
  • Must be available to work some weekends, holidays, and overtime as required. On-call duty responsibilities are part of the position.
  • Must be able to conduct field walk-downs in an operating plant environment.
  • Occasional travel outside the Duke Energy system may be necessary.
Specific Requirements
  • Ability to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
  • May be required to participate in the Emergency Response Organization (ERO), which could involve callouts with a specified response time and inclusion in an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment such as hard-hat, safety glasses, and fall protection as needed.
  • Work is conducted in both office and plant environments. Additional hours may be required based on workload and business needs.
  • Occasional overnight travel
