What is an assistant defensible space inspector?

Assistant Defensible Space Inspectors are professionals who support the evaluation of properties to ensure compliance with defensible space regulations, which are designed to reduce wildfire risk. They typically work under the supervision of lead inspectors and assist in inspecting homes and properties, educating property owners about defensible space requirements, and documenting findings. Their work helps promote safer communities by ensuring that vegetation and other potential fire hazards are managed appropriately around structures. This role is often part of fire prevention and community safety programs, especially in areas prone to wildfires.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant defensible space inspector?

To thrive as an Assistant Defensible Space Inspector, you need a foundational knowledge of fire prevention, inspection practices, and relevant local regulations, typically supported by a high school diploma and specialized training in fire safety. Familiarity with inspection tools, GPS mapping devices, and reporting software is often required for accurate assessment and documentation. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and customer service skills help inspectors educate property owners and collaborate with fire prevention teams. These skills ensure accurate inspection, public safety, and compliance with defensible space requirements to reduce wildfire risks.

  • Manage all phases of the engagement lifecycle: kickoff, site visit, analysis, report preparation, and client delivery
  • Serve as a credible, reliable point of contact for clients on assigned engagements, communicating findings clearly to technical and executive audiences
  • Conduct on-site inspections of machinery, equipment, and industrial facilities, including manufacturing plants, warehouses, and varied operational environments
  • Delegate effectively to associate and senior associate-level staff, maintaining oversight of work product and developing junior team members through day-to-day collaboration
  • Exercise sound judgment on when to engage practice leadership versus move forward independently

  • Proactively leverage the Managing Director and senior leadership as a resource, particularly in complex or novel situations

What Makes You Successful in This Role
  • U.S. work authorization is required

  • Demonstrated experience in machinery and equipment valuation or a closely related discipline
  • Proven ability to manage client engagements independently, including scoping and pricing work
  • Strong professional presence with experience engaging senior or technically sophisticated audiences
  • Willingness and ability to travel for site visits, including industrial and manufacturing environments
  • Engineering background or mindset with comfort analyzing mechanical and operational systems is a strong plus
  • Finance background or mindset with comfort understanding and analyzing financial statements is a strong plus
  • Experience directing and developing associate-level staff is a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Collaborative approach with peers, associates, and firm leadership; proactively engages leadership rather than operating in isolation

Why You’ll Love It Here

Marshall & Stevens is not just a place to work—it’s a place to grow, innovate, and make a difference. As we continue to expand, you’ll have the opportunity to be part of a dynamic team that is shaping the future of the valuation and advisory services industry. If you’re ready to make a significant impact, we’d love to hear from you!
