Job Summary
The Assistant Director of Applied Analytics, Survey, and Evaluation leads practical analytics, evaluation, survey, and evidence-building work that helps Salt Lake Community College understand student outcomes, institutional performance, and the impact of college programs and services. The position is part of the Data Science and Analytics team and works closely with data governance, data engineering, decision support, official reporting, and compliance functions.
This is a working leader role. The incumbent is expected to complete hands-on analytics, evaluation, and survey work while also setting direction, assigning work, coaching staff, and reviewing the work of a team. The role helps turn college questions into clear project plans, sound analysis, useful findings, and practical recommendations.
The position supports the AVP in building trusted data, useful analysis, and responsible evidence practices for the college. The work includes program and service evaluation, survey design and analysis, applied data science, student outcome studies, post-completion studies, labor market and program outcome analysis, and coordination of SLCC's Institutional Review Board (IRB) process when needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Applied Analytics, Evaluation, and Survey Leadership
Lead the day-to-day applied analytics, evaluation, survey, and evidence-building work of the team. Set priorities, shape project scopes, assign work, coach staff, and review deliverables so that the work is useful, accurate, timely, and aligned with college strategic objectives.
  • Maintain a clear project portfolio for the team and help decide which work should be started, paused, changed, or ended.
  • Translate college needs into practical questions, project plans, methods, timelines, and expected outputs.
  • Supervise the Applied Analytics, Survey, and Evaluation team as part of one shared analytics and evidence function.
  • Provide regular feedback and peer review on methods, analysis, writing, visuals, and findings.
  • Support the AVP and Data Science and Analytics leadership team in carrying out the college analytics, evaluation, survey, and data strategy.

Hands-On Analytics, Evaluation, and Survey WorkDesign, conduct, and guide analytics, evaluation, and survey projects that help the college understand what is happening, why it is happening, and what actions may help. This includes planned institutional analyses and focused work requested by college leaders.
  • Design analyses and evaluations using the right mix of quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Lead or support analysis related to student access, retention, completion, post-completion outcomes, program impact, service impact, and institutional goals.
  • Develop evaluation plans for college programs, services, grants, and strategic efforts when needed.
  • Analyze findings and connect them to clear options, risks, tradeoffs, and next steps.
  • Make sure findings are documented and easy for college leaders and teams to use.

Applied Data Science and Student Outcomes Analysis
Lead applied data science work that supports student success, program improvement, planning, and institutional learning. Work with the Data Scientist and with data engineering, data governance, decision support, and official reporting partners so models and analysis are built on trusted data and sound methods.
  • Guide descriptive, predictive, and exploratory analysis that helps answer practical college questions.
  • Support work on post-completion outcomes, labor market outcomes, program outcomes, student pathways, and other high-priority institutional questions.
  • Help test, explain, document, and monitor models or advanced analysis before they are used in decisions.
  • Work with data governance and data engineering partners to improve definitions, data quality, lineage, and responsible use of data.
  • Avoid black-box analysis by making methods, limits, and assumptions clear.

Institutional Student Survey Strategy, Administration, and Reporting
The position is responsible for SLCC's institutional student survey function, including survey planning, design, deployment, administration, analysis, reporting, and use of findings. This includes coordinating institutional student surveys across the college so survey work is purposeful, timely, consistent, and connected to clear decision, planning, evaluation, and improvement needs.
  • Lead the design, deployment, administration, analysis, and reporting of institutional student surveys.
  • Maintain a coordinated institutional student survey calendar to manage timing, audiences, purpose, and survey burden.
  • Develop survey instruments, sampling plans, deployment timelines, response rate strategies, analysis plans, and reporting plans.
  • Share survey findings through clear reports, briefs, visuals, presentations, and practical recommendations.

IRB Coordination and Responsible Data Use Support
Coordinate SLCC's Institutional Review Board process and help the college manage human subjects review, data privacy, and responsible evidence-building in a consistent way. Serve as a point of contact for IRB questions, applications, review steps, and follow-up.
  • Coordinate IRB submissions, reviews, communications, records, and meeting needs.
  • Help applicants understand IRB requirements and improve application quality.
  • Support responsible use of student and employee data in research and evaluation projects.
  • Work with college partners when human subjects review, data privacy, grants, or external agreements overlap.
  • Keep IRB processes clear, consistent, and documented.

Communication, Consultation, and College PartnershipServe as a research and analytics partner to college leaders, departments, committees, and project teams. Help people ask better questions, understand findings, and use evidence in practical ways.
  • Present findings in meetings, briefs, reports, dashboards, and other formats as needed.
  • Consult with college partners on research questions, methods, interpretation, and limits of the data.
  • Serve on committees and work groups where research, evaluation, surveys, or analytics support is needed.
  • Help build a college culture that values trusted data, clear evidence, and responsible analysis.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

Minimum qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant data science, analytics, evaluation, survey research, social science, education, statistics, or related field.
  • Three (3) to six (6) or more years of direct, full-time, paid experience in analytics, evaluation, surveys, institutional analytics, applied research, and/or data science.
  • Experience leading projects that require data analysis, evaluation design, findings, and practical recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or PhD in a relevant data science, analytics, evaluation, survey research, social science, education, public policy, statistics, or related field.
  • Experience in community college, higher education, institutional analytics, program evaluation, or student success work.
  • Experience supervising or coaching staff.
  • Experience with institutional analytics, student success analysis, program evaluation, labor market analysis, post-completion outcomes, or survey research.
  • Experience with SQL, R, Python, Power BI, Tableau, Qualtrics, or similar tools.
