REPORTS TO: Director of Information Services

STATUS: Exempt, full-time, salary

LOCATION: Chicago, Illinois, (Hybrid/remote schedule)   

SALARY RANGE: $51,261 - $69,836 (commensurate with experience)

All Chicago MHH's mission is to unite our community and resources to provide solutions that ensure and sustain the stability of home. On any given night, nearly 12,000 Chicagoans do not have a place to call home. These are our neighbors and together we can ensure that we all have stable homes.


All Chicago MHH prevents and ends homelessness through emergency financial assistance, community partnerships, data analytics, and training and research. We strengthen our community's collective efforts to prevent and end homelessness, guided by a vision of impact, influence, and inspiration. As our name implies, All Chicago MHH brings together homeless service providers, non-profit partners, donors, and people with the lived experience of homelessness in a strategic effort to make homelessness history in Chicago.


All Chicago manages the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), a system which manages data on Chicagoans experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness and the services they receive. Our team supports more than 1000 individuals with training, helpdesk services, and running and interpreting reports. Chicago also leverages this data to drive allocation decisions, set strategy and policy, and monitor progress toward ending homelessness.

Position Summary:

The Data Analyst is a member of the Homeless Management Information Systems team. The team works with the community to provide Homeless Management Information System administration, create reports and data extracts, conduct in-person training and provide technical assistance for users across the Chicago Continuum of Care (CoC). The HMIS Data Analyst plays an essential role in reviewing, understanding, and processing data from multiple sources to develop reports, data requests, visualizations, and data transformations based on the needs of the community. The responsibilities of the Data Analyst include creating new reports and custom data extracts as directed, maintaining existing report portfolio by updating content as needed, and testing and validation of output produced.


Position responsibilities and work volume will be established and evaluated through ongoing supervision, annual reviews, and the development of an annual professional development plan.


Position Responsibilities:

Report and Data Request Development

  • Work with requesting partners and internal staff to understand report, visualization, and data extract requests
  • Document requirements necessary for solution delivery
  • Develop technical specifications for building the requested solution
  • Create data sources, tables, spreadsheets, programs, processes, and data flows to support custom reporting and data extract requests
  • Ensure verification and validation of all data sources and data transformations
  • Produce report mock-up or proof of concept for review during solution development
  • Document expected results and test plan to verify results
  • Maintain and update data dictionary as needed for common data definitions for the CoC
  • Prepare and maintain a catalog of reports and data requests
  • Update report and request catalog based on HUD Data Standards Changes and other system-wide specification changes
  • Pursue additional training or knowledge as needed to accomplish the above activities
  • Proactively identify data quality issues and work with HMIS management to implement solutions
  • Produce and provide documentation on content, context, and proper use of reports and data requests
  • Train internal and external users on utilizing reports and data extracts

System Administration & Help Desk Support

  • Collaborate with Help Desk staff and end-users to investigate and resolve issues with existing reports, data extracts, and data visualizations
  • Assist with supporting production systems that perform regularly scheduled data loads, transformations, and report distribution
  • Administration of some internal and external data sources other than HMIS system
  • Remain knowledgeable about current Data Standards, HMIS application and data changes, CoC-specific uses of data, and other relevant topics through independent study, relevant workshops, and conferences

Other Tasks

  • Keep current on trends and best practices related to reporting tools
  • Actively participate in department and agency meetings
  • Communicate effectively with management, peers, and partners in written, oral, video, and in-person communications
  • Other duties as assigned


Requirements

Successful candidates will demonstrate commitment to preventing and ending homelessness in Chicago and will have the following:

  • 2 years of overall relevant work experience or a college degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Business Analytics or related field
  • 1 year of experience in report design and implementation using tools such as MS Excel templates with VBA macros, Python scripting, Microsoft SSRS Report Builder, BusinessObjects Web intelligence, or equivalent tools
  • Experience defining and performing quality assurance tasks including testing and validation of results
  • Expert knowledge/skills with Microsoft Office products including, but not limited to Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server databases and query language
  • Experience with a Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) is preferred
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to convey information in a clear and concise manner
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and manage changing priorities
  • Proven ability to be flexible and work hard, both independently and in a team environment
  • A strong work ethic, integrity, and the highest ethical standards are expected
