Job Summary
This job is on-site in Ann Arbor during early summer (May 1st-July 15th) and can be hybrid (1-2 days working off site) at other times.
As Assistant Program Manager, you will report to the WISE Program Officer. You will take a leadership role in designing and running WISE summer camps for K-12 students and be an important partner in delivering WISE's academic year programming.
Camp Leadership (55%)
WISE hosts 3-4 middle school STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) week-long day camps every summer, serving 60-100 students and plans to expand to 6-10 programs. With guidance from the WISE Program Officer, you will oversee all of camp logistics and curriculum:
  • Coordinate with appropriate units on campus (e.g. Children on Campus) to ensure WISE camps are in compliance with all university policies and procedures, and that campers have a safe and fun experience
  • Choose themes for each camp
  • Recruit U-M faculty, staff, students and community members to lead age-appropriate activities for campers
  • Guide camp instructors (paid and volunteer) in lesson planning, ordering of supplies, and other preparations
  • Partner and collaborate with the leadership of other U-M summer camps as appropriate
  • Supervise all camp counselors, including hiring, training, approving time, and providing feedback
  • Partner with the WISE Project & Events Manager on marketing and communications efforts to recruit campers
  • Communicate with the WISE Managing Director about the camp budget(s)
  • Manage all communications with campers' parents before, during and after camp
  • Represent WISE on the University Outreach Council and in other K-12 outreach efforts
  • Collect and analyze data to measure the effectiveness of camp programming

Academic Year WISE Programming (45%)
During the academic year, WISE hosts a range of community building, academic success, and career readiness activities for undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Partnering with WISE staff leading those programs, you will:
  • Assist in identifying appropriate guest presenters and manage the logistics of their visits and presentations,
  • Collaborate with partner units (e.g. Science Learning Center, Newnan Advising Center, First-Gen programs) on designing and implementing programming
  • Identify, and bring attention to, potential roadblocks or obstacles to the successful implementation of WISE programs
  • Collect feedback and assist in program evaluation efforts

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in STEM, education, or related field and at least three years work experience
  • At least two years experience working with students in grades 6-12
  • At least one year experience in curriculum design and delivery for face-to-face learning
  • At least one year experience working in informal learning spaces (e.g. camps, museums, etc)
  • Experience developing partnerships with subject matter experts for the delivery of educational content
  • Experience with developing program assessment and evaluation questions
  • Experience with day-to-day use of technology (Google and Microsoft suites) for administrative and instructional purposes

Desired Qualifications*
  • Experience co-creating science and engineering experiences for middle school or high school students
  • Experience training K-12 outreach instructors
  • Supervisory experience
  • At least one year of experience in higher education program design and implementation
