Job description

Are you a hands-on accounting leader with nonprofit accounting expertise and a passion for mission-driven work? A well-established New York nonprofit organization is seeking an Assistant Comptroller to help oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, audits, and accounts payable while supporting strategic financial initiatives across the organization.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in a collaborative environment and enjoys improving processes, strengthening controls, and mentoring staff.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Compliance
  • Prepare and review government and regulatory filings, including CFR, Form 990, Form 5500, and other required reports.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, grant requirements, funding regulations, and organizational policies.
  • Prepare journal entries, allocations, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
Accounting & Fiscal Operations
  • Oversee general ledger activities, monthly close, account reconciliations, and financial reporting processes.
  • Manage investment accounting activities, including reconciliation and reporting of portfolio transactions.
  • Oversee fixed asset accounting, depreciation schedules, and related reporting.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting systems, technology, and operational efficiency.
Audit & Internal Controls
  • Coordinate annual audits and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors and regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and respond to audit inquiries.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting procedures.
Accounts Payable Oversight
  • Supervise accounts payable operations and vendor payment processes.
  • Review aging reports, reconciliations, and disbursement activity.
  • Partner with operational leaders to improve purchasing and payables workflows.
Leadership
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff.
  • Drive process improvements and operational efficiencies.
  • Participate in organization-wide initiatives and strategic projects.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience within a nonprofit or government environment.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, grant reporting, budgeting, and audit preparation.
  • Advanced Excel skills required.
  • Experience with Sage MIP Accounting System highly preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
