Are you an experienced communications technician who enjoys working with advanced radio systems that support critical public safety operations? Join Oakland County and help maintain the reliable digital communications infrastructure used by emergency responders and public safety professionals throughout the community.
What You'll Do
- Perform skilled preventive maintenance and repairs on the County's digital communications systems.
- Support the 700/800 MHz Motorola P25 simulcast subsystem of Michigan's Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS).
- Maintain and repair the County's 420 MHz Motorola MOTOTRBO radio communications system.

Minimum Qualifications
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. a. Must be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development (G.E.D.) Test.
b. Have had at least three (3) years of full-time work experience in the installation, configuration, diagnostics, maintenance and repair of radio systems and components;
OR
2. a. Possess an Associate's degree or equivalent education from an accredited college or university with major in Physics, Electronics Technology, Electronic Engineering Technology, or a closely related area.
b. Have had at least one (1) year of full-time professional work in the installation, configuration, diagnostics, maintenance and repair of radio systems and components.
3. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's or chauffeurs license.
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to utilize current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and Internet software.
- Reasonable knowledge of personal computer capabilities, operations, applications, and of new technology.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Troubleshoots hardware and software related difficulties relating to the installation and use of new technology.
- Unboxes, sets-up, installs and configures computer hardware, software, and related peripherals.
- Installs operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, UNIX and Hewlett Packard.
- Installs and configures application software on a wide variety of hardware platforms at local and remote user sites.
- Answers calls from users relative to equipment malfunctions and performs network component failure analysis for microcomputers, modems, circuits, display stations and printers.
- May provide a Help Desk function to assist customers with hardware and software needs.
- Performs network software problem determinations for less complex areas and takes or recommends appropriate corrective action to minimize impact on the host computer, and to properly manage network transactions/packets.
- Delivers personal computers, laptops, printers and related devices and peripherals to local and remote County departments, municipalities, and local agencies. Involves lifting up to 80 pounds.
- Assists customers in the resolution of difficulties encountered in the operation of their particular system and answers inquiries, within expertise, regarding the functioning of the system.
- Prepares and maintains local and remote network documentation detailing what devices are in use, their capacities, interrelationships with other devices and other pertinent information.
- Installs and/or replaces display stations, printers, modems, control units, coaxial cable, twisted-pair wire, and cable ends at local and remote user sites.
- Maintains system tables for the production and test of teleprocessing monitors by inputting updated information to the computers and controllers as necessary.
- Maintains records of difficulties encountered by system users, reviews, and collects related data, and provides recommended solutions to prevent further difficulties.
- Keeps user agencies or departments informed of modifications in procedures, input/output reports, system capabilities, and other related changes.
- Receives shipments and maintains hardware and software inventory for the department.
- Provides hardware and software inventory reports as needed.
- Utilizes current countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE RADIO TEAM
- Performs programming, preventative maintenance, repairs and troubleshoots the county's radio communication systems and accompanying auxiliary systems.
- Repairs communications equipment, radio frequency (RF) hardware and software and other related equipment. Familiarity with electronic communication test equipment and the use of schematic diagrams and/or blueprints and hand tools
- Maintains radio frequency tower site buildings, generators, LP tanks and general infrastructure.
- Utilizes various test instruments such as digital multimeter, communication analyzers, and digital signal analyzers to align, adjust, and calibrate communications and other electronic equipment according to manufacturers' performance specifications.
- Performs physical activities, such as bending, stooping, and/or sitting for long periods of time while manually disassembling and re-assembling portions of vehicles to repair mobile radios, antennas, and other equipment. Lifts and/or assists in lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders and carrying equipment. Works on rooftops of multiple storied buildings.
- Repairs radio accessory equipment, including microphones, control heads, speakers, cables, sirens, antennas, and case mountings by replacing defective, broken, or damaged parts
- Utilizes current countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to communicate to accurately convey information.
