Job description

The Town of Essex, Vermont has an opening for a per diem Assistant Clerk I to support operations in the Town Clerk's Office. This role involves a variety of administrative and clerical responsibilities, including maintaining municipal records, issuing various licenses and official documents, assisting with elections, and providing information to the public and other Town departments. This position will also play an important role in all customer service-related duties such as answering phones, assisting customers at the Clerk's counter, and responding to routine e-mail inquiries.

This position reports to the Town Clerk & Treasurer and operates in accordance with established Town policies. The Clerk's Office is staffed by two full-time employees, and this role is intended to provide flexible support during employee absences and busy seasons. This position will not have set hours; however, the position is expected to average approximately 10 - 15 hours per week. The Clerk's Office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This position requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent and one year's experience in an administrative position. Previous experience in customer service is desired. Cash handling experience is strongly preferred. Strong computer skills and Microsoft Suite knowledge are required. Previous municipal office experience is preferred.


The starting salary for this position will be between $18-$23 per hour depending on qualifications and experience.
