CITY OF FREDERICKSBURG, VIRGINIA

What You’ll DoThe City of Fredericksburg is seeking a qualified professional to help manage the water distribution and sanitary sewer conveyance and treatment systems in our Department of Public Utilities.  As the Assistant Director of Public Utilities, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the essential operations of our city’s Utilities Department through:
 Strategic and Operational Planning
  • Guiding department operations and collaborating on development of departmental goals and objectives.
 
  • Important initiatives will include management and oversight of utility maintenance, as well as system renovations and replacements over the next several years.
Budget and Project Planning
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of department operational budgets and capital improvement projects. 
 
  • Serve on the project team for the City’s ongoing renovation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant project
Supervision and Compliance
Oversight of the Utilities Department’s daily operations and - ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.Reporting
  • Preparing and collaborating on reports submitted to various regulatory agencies.
 
  • Presenting to City Council and other groups regarding department operations and projects.

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science or other relevant field.
  • Six to nine years of progressive responsible experience in public utilities operations and administration, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia state driver’s license. (or ability to obtain licensure within 6 months of appointment.)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or ability to obtain licensure within 6 months of appointment.)
Optional
  • VDEQ Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators Licenses
  • Project Management Professional certification
