The City of Fredericksburg presents an exceptional opportunity for you! The newly created position of Assistant City Engineer within the Public Works team is designed to support the city's ongoing growth and redevelopment efforts. In this role, you will contribute significantly to various projects while being part of a dedicated team committed to serving a vibrant community.
The Assistant City Engineer will assist the City Engineer in the planning, direction, and management of the Engineering Division within the Public Works Department. Additionally, this position will ensure regulatory compliance and foster collaboration among City departments, citizens, and external agencies regarding engineering and construction activities. Key responsibilities will include:
 
Engineering Division Management
Assist in planning, managing, and operating the Engineering Division, covering areas such as land development, capital projects, stormwater management, permits, and construction inspection.Regulatory Compliance and Standards
Review subdivision, site, and development plans to ensure they meet regulations and standards. Maintain and update City engineering standards, specifications, and technical policies.Project Evaluation and Coordination
Evaluate project impacts related to traffic, stormwater, utilities, and environmental requirements. Coordinate engineering reviews and activities with City departments, utility providers, and regulatory agencies.Technical Guidance and Supervision
Provide technical guidance to developers, engineers, contractors, and the public. Supervise paraprofessional engineering staff and inspect public works construction projects.
 Project Design and Management
Assist in planning, designing, budgeting, and delivering City projects. Review and approve engineering designs, plans, specifications, and cost estimates. Manage project schedules and budgets for timely, cost-effective delivery.Public Representation and Communication
Represent the Engineering Division at public meetings, boards, and City Council. Prepare and present reports and technical information to elected officials and the public. Respond to citizen inquiries and resolve complaints related to projects.Why Join the Fredericksburg Team?A Career with Purpose

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Six (6) years of experience in the engineering field.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license or ability to obtain within six (6) months.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Virginia or ability to obtain licensure within six (6) months through reciprocity.
Special Requirements
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Virginia DEQ Erosion & Stormwater Combined Program Administrator certification within 12 months.
