Duties
The Department of Art History at the State University of New York at New Paltz (Art History | SUNY New Paltz) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Global Early Modern Art (1400-1800) at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin August 2026. The successful candidate will specialize in the visual and material culture of Africa or the Americas in the Early Modern period, teach upper- and lower-division art history courses that decentralize the "Western" canon, conduct scholarly activity appropriate to the position (as demonstrated by ongoing research, publications, and presentations at relevant conferences), and participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising and service on departmental and campus-wide committees. The teaching load is three courses per semester.
The Department of Art History at SUNY New Paltz welcomes applicants with specializations in the visual and material culture of Africa or the Americas in the Early Modern period (1400-1800). We encourage applications from individuals who demonstrate scholarly interest in the global Renaissance and/or transcultural approaches to Early Modern art history. The preferred candidate will be capable of teaching an in-demand survey of world art, as well as specialized classes in the applicant's area of expertise that will expand the department's curriculum. We seek a teacher-scholar who can advise and mentor students from diverse backgrounds, who is committed to fostering an inclusive atmosphere, and whose courses would foster connections to other departments and programs on campus, such as Black Studies or Latin American & Caribbean Studies.
The State University of New York at New Paltz has offered the Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History since 1964. The Department of Art History, which awards more degrees in Art History than any other SUNY college or university, is dedicated to the teaching of undergraduates and to providing students with a broad and varied understanding of world art traditions. The Department, which is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and housed in the School of Fine and Performing Arts, offers the Art History major, minor, and concentration within the Elementary Education Pre-K-6 curriculum. Small class sizes, usually numbering 20-35 students, allow for close interaction between faculty and students. The Department hosts an annual undergraduate Art History symposium, now entering its eighth year (https://hawksites.newpaltz.edu/2025arthistorystudentsymposium/). Students and faculty regularly utilize the resources of the on-campus Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art (The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz) and New York City-area museums.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in art history by the start of the appointment.
  • Knowledge and ability to teach college-level courses in global early modern art history and a world art survey.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • College/university teaching experience beyond T.A. level.
  • Demonstrated scholarly ability in the form of publications in candidate's area of expertise.
  • Ability to teach in more than one geographic area.

Special Instructions to Applicants
