Assistant Chief Operating Engineer information

What are Assistant Chief Operating Engineers?

Assistant Chief Operating Engineers are professionals responsible for supporting the Chief Operating Engineer in managing, coordinating, and maintaining the operations of a facility or building’s engineering systems. Their duties often include overseeing maintenance staff, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, troubleshooting technical problems, and assisting with the planning and implementation of facility upgrades. They play a critical role in ensuring that building systems such as HVAC, electrical, and plumbing are operating efficiently and safely. This position typically requires significant technical knowledge and experience in facilities management or engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Chief Operating Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Chief Operating Engineer, you need in-depth knowledge of building systems, HVAC, electrical and mechanical maintenance, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree or technical certification and several years of experience. Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS), computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and certifications like EPA Universal or a stationary engineer's license are commonly required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you manage teams and respond effectively to emergencies or complex operational issues. These competencies ensure safe, efficient building operations and compliance with regulations, which are critical for organizational success.

What are some typical challenges faced by an Assistant Chief Operating Engineer, and how can they prepare to address them?

Assistant Chief Operating Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating maintenance schedules to minimize downtime, addressing unexpected equipment failures, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Successfully navigating these challenges involves strong organizational skills, effective communication with both engineering teams and upper management, and the ability to quickly troubleshoot and prioritize issues. Proactively staying updated on building systems and fostering a collaborative environment with other departments can also help in effectively managing these responsibilities.

About the Opportunity
Setpoint Systems Corporation is a 43-year-old award-winning systems integration firm proudly serving the Rocky Mountain Region since 1983. With over four decades of experience, we have designed, installed, and serviced more than 4,000 integrated building control systems for over 1,600 commercial, industrial, and institutional clients. Our commitment to innovation, craftsmanship, and customer satisfaction has earned us numerous accolades and a reputation as a trusted leader in building control solutions.
Setpoint Systems Corporation is rapidly growing, and we're looking for an exceptional Chief Operating Officer to help us scale. This is a critical executive role for a dynamic problem solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment, leads with purpose, and is ready to build something great alongside a young, energetic, and smart team.
The COO will serve as a key strategic partner to the CEO/CFO and senior management team - fully aligned with senior management and our corporate vision - leading all project lifecycle activities from engineering and design through installation, turnover, and lessons learned, while upholding our core standard: "Excellence is Our Standard, Customer Service is Our Passion."
This is an opportunity for a committed, hands-on leader who wants to build a department up, not just manage it - someone who sees the potential in a growing organization and has the drive and structure to unlock it.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Operations & Project Leadership
  • Profitability Management: Develop and execute strategies to ensure sustained project profitability, including job costing, profit-and-loss oversight, and financial accountability across all engagements.
  • Operational Planning: Oversee the development and execution of comprehensive project planning and scheduling.
  • Engineering Re-estimates: Manage engineering re-estimates to keep project budgets on track.
  • Process Excellence: Drive continuous improvement across all operational workflows, including documentation, project execution, and service delivery. Champion the organization's ability to manage change and scale effectively through periods of growth.
  • Customer Relationship Management: Serve as the primary interface for key accounts, championing customer development and satisfaction.
Project Execution & Management
  • Project Scheduling: Develop, generate, and maintain detailed project and labor schedules.
  • Team & Subcontractor Oversight: Manage installers, technicians, and subcontractor selection and performance.
  • Project Lifecycle: Oversee all project phases: start-up, checkout, turnover, and postmortems.
  • Change Management: Estimate labor and material change orders and manage all change order documentation.
  • Meetings & Coordination: Lead project meetings and coordinate effectively across trades.
Project Engineering & Technical Development
  • System Design: Contribute to the design of temperature control systems and related building automation products through SSC processes.
  • Software Development: Develop and document project software, including databases, programs, and graphics.
  • Material Management: Assist in equipment and material standardization; manage material schedules and requisitions.
  • Technical Documentation: Support compilation of project submittals.
Training & Service
  • Technical Training: Develop and execute training programs for technicians, engineers, and internal staff.
  • Customer Training: Create and deliver customer training on newly installed systems.
  • Documentation: Ensure accurate documentation of service orders, billing, and labor/material estimates.
  • Post-Installation: Oversee proper postmortem documentation and lessons-learned processes.

What We're Looking For
Required Experience & Qualifications
  • 10+ years of Building Automation Systems (BAS) controls experience - including mechanical system design.
  • 10+ years of management and leadership experience, with a proven track record of leading and developing teams.
  • Minimum bachelor's degree in electrical / mechanical engineering
  • CEM / PE certifications preferred
  • Hands-on experience with job costing and profit-and-loss management, with the ability to analyze financial performance and drive profitability at the project level.
  • Strong scheduling and project management skills with a history of delivering complex projects on time and within budget.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage organizational change and lead through rapid growth - building scalable processes and maintaining excellence through expansion.
  • Experience estimating labor, managing change orders, and overseeing subcontractors.
Who You Are
  • A dynamic problem solver who approaches challenges with creativity, urgency, and confidence.
  • A team player - collaborative, engaging, and energized by working alongside a talented group of people.
  • Committed, loyal, and accountable - someone the team can count on to follow through.
  • Versatile and open-minded, able to adapt as priorities shift in a rapidly growing company.
  • Structured and organized, bringing clarity and process to complex operational environments.
  • Aligned with senior management and the corporate vision - a true partner in building the company's future.
  • Excited to build - you don't just want to manage a department, you want to grow one.
  • High sense of urgency - you move fast, make decisions, and keep things moving forward.
