How You'll Make an Impact

As an Assistant Fire Chief, you will serve as the second-in-command and provide overall operational oversight of the emergency response organization, including fire suppression, EMS, HazMat, technical rescue operations, and training programs. In this role, you will:

  • Ensure the effective execution and sustainability of all emergency response operations across fire, EMS, HazMat, and technical rescue disciplines.
  • Assume full responsibility for departmental operations in the absence of the Fire Chief.
  • Support and optimize daily emergency response activities, ensuring readiness, efficiency, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Lead the coordination, delivery, and documentation of over 1,000 annual training hours, including fire, EMS, HazMat, technical rescue, leadership development, emergency driving, and pump operations.
  • Oversee EMS operations, including compliance with State Health Department (DSHS) licensing and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment with NFPA, OSHA, and industrial emergency response standards.
  • Serve as a key liaison within the Channel Industries Mutual Aid (CIMA) network, supporting regional emergency preparedness and response coordination.
  • Act as a CIMA Specialist and Zone 3 & 4 Inspection Officer, ensuring readiness and compliance across mutual aid partners.
  • Promote a culture of safety, preparedness, and continuous improvement within the emergency response team.

Required Qualifications that Enable Your Success

  • 5+ years of progressive leadership experience in emergency response or similar operational environment.
  • 15+ years of experience in emergency response across fire suppression, rescue, HazMat, and EMS disciplines.
  • 10+ years of experience leading and facilitating training programs aligned with NFPA, OSHA, and industrial standards.
  • Current and active DSHS EMT certification.
  • Active EMS Instructor certification.
  • Demonstrated experience in multi-disciplinary emergency operations management.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and coordinate cross-functional emergency response efforts.
  • Must be in good standing and fully compliant with all required Emergency Response Team (ERT) training.

Preferred Qualifications that Drive You Forward

  • Experience serving in a command-level or second-in-command role within an industrial or municipal fire department.
  • Strong familiarity with Texas industrial emergency response systems, particularly within plant environments.
  • Experience working with or within mutual aid organizations such as CIMA.
  • Advanced certifications in fire service leadership, HazMat, or technical rescue disciplines.
