Job description

OVERVIEW
The Critical Care Transport Nurse is responsible for providing high-quality critical care and transportation of critically ill or injured patients to the appropriate medical facilities utilizing standards and guidelines established by Mercyhealth Medical Director(s). The transport nurse is a key member of the Critical Care, Emergency Department, and demonstrates the highest quality of emergency/critical care and transport nursing standards of practice and commitment to safety.
Schedule: 3x12 hour shifts, Weekend rotation
Shift: Nights
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides nursing care within his/her scope of practice from the initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility. This practice would be maintained through patient care with complete documentation to be finished prior to the end of the assigned shift.
  • Maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills by participating in ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences.
  • Communicates educational needs to program leadership.
  • Maintains documentation of required licensure, certifications, continuing education, safety training, OSHA and HIPAA training, clinical rotations, advanced procedures and attends continuing education programs pertinent to his/her area of practice.
  • Attends monthly crew meetings, education events and quarterly SIM Lab.
  • Knowledgeable in use and routine maintenance of all equipment and supplies used by Mercyhealth.
  • Responsible for reporting medical equipment failures and taking initial steps to ensure repair of equipment as directed.
  • Maintains adequate supplies in the ambulance to deliver patient care.
  • Keeps the ambulance clean and orderly to ensure rapid response to all transport requests.
  • Functions as a medical transport member by attending pre-mission briefings and mission debriefings as well as completing necessary documentation in a timely manner.
  • Assists in pre-mission transport as requested, i.e., radio, navigational, and visual observation activities.
  • Complies with safety standards to assure safety of self, medical personnel, patient, and equipment and conducts safety briefings as needed.
  • Participates in patient and referring institution follow-up and in planned outreach marketing and education activities.
  • Assist with the routine maintenance of the transport vehicle, equipment, and facilities to ensure a clean and professional appearance.
  • Acts as a preceptor and/or participates in orientation of new employees and students as assigned and communicates program goals and objectives.
  • Participates regularly in Mercyhealth meetings, activities, projects, and committees (to include research and publishing opportunities).
  • Develops, initiates and executes a patient plan of care according to the patient's individualized needs, as prescribed by the physician and/or hospital policy.
  • Utilizes resources available to teach and support patient and family education.
  • Maintains specified number of shifts on a critical care unit (ICU, SCU, ED), as well as on the critical care/ ALS ground transport service.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • ADN required, BSN preferred
  • Minimum of (2) two years, preferred Five (5) years of RN experience of critical care and/or emergency department RN experience. Experience must include ICU or CCU and/or ED experience in a high-volume setting.
  • Previous flight or ground transport experience preferred.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE
  • Licensed as an RN in state of practice.
  • License as an RN in both WI and IL within 6 months.
  • Current certifications in American Heart Association BLS; ACLS; PALS within 90 days
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required within (3) three months of hire.
  • National Institute Healthcare Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required within (1) one year of hire.
  • Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse (PHRN) required within (1) one year of hire.
  • Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) within six months of hire.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) or Trauma Nurse Specialist (TNS) required within (2) two years of hire.
  • Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN) or Certified Flight Registered Nurse CFRN required within (2) two years of hire.
  • NIMS Training IS 100, 200, and HazMat awareness within six months of hire.
  • EVOC Driving course completion within (3) months of hire

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
May include color blind test (per department guidelines)
LEVEL OF SUPERVISION
Acts in a supervisory position when assigned as Crew Chief of the ambulance as outlined with the respective roles and responsibilities of the position.
SUPERVISES
May be required to act as a Crew Chief once orientation and precepting has been successfully completed. Duties will be covered with staff once they are qualified to act in the position.
PAY RANGE:
$39.58 - $63.33
