What does an assistant building inspector do?

An Assistant Building Inspector helps ensure that construction projects comply with building codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards. They typically assist with on-site inspections, review construction plans, and document findings under the supervision of a senior inspector. Their work helps maintain safe structures and supports the permitting process within a city or municipality.

What are some typical challenges faced by assistant building inspectors during site inspections?

Assistant Building Inspectors often encounter challenges such as navigating active construction sites safely, ensuring compliance with local codes amid evolving regulations, and communicating effectively with contractors who may have differing interpretations of requirements. Balancing thorough inspections with maintaining project timelines can be demanding, as delays may impact multiple stakeholders. Building strong relationships with experienced inspectors and staying current with code updates can help address these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant building inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Building Inspector, you need a solid understanding of building codes, construction practices, and inspection procedures, often supported by a degree in construction management or a related field. Familiarity with inspection software, digital documentation tools, and certifications like ICC (International Code Council) are typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help inspectors interact with contractors and ensure compliance. These skills are crucial for ensuring building safety, legal compliance, and maintaining public trust in the construction process.

Can you become an assistant building inspector with no experience?

Assistant building inspectors typically need some knowledge of building codes and inspection procedures, but entry-level positions may be available to candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent. Relevant skills such as attention to detail and familiarity with construction or safety standards can be developed on the job or through training programs. Certification or licensing requirements vary by location and may be required for advancement.

Is there a demand for assistant building inspectors?

The demand for assistant building inspectors is expected to grow in line with the construction and real estate industries, as municipalities and private firms require inspections to ensure building safety and code compliance. Job description

About Machina Labs

Engineering moves at software speed. Manufacturing doesn't. Yet.

Machina Labs is building software-defined factories that enable the rapid production of complex metal structures directly from digital design. By combining robotics, advanced metal forming, and automated production systems, we are redefining how parts move from prototype to full-scale production.

Backed by Lockheed Martin, Toyota, and NVIDIA, we are building the manufacturing infrastructure powering the next generation of aerospace, defense, and advanced mobility systems.

Role Overview:

Machina Labs is seeking a Quality Inspectorย to support and lead inspection activities for high-precision, flight-critical components.

This role operates as a senior individual contributor on the production floor, responsible for executing inspections, owning quality outcomes, and driving process discipline. You will partner closely with manufacturing and engineering to ensure quality is built into the process, not just inspected at the end.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Own and execute receiving, in-process, first article, and final inspections to ensure compliance with engineering specifications, GD&T, and customer requirements.
  • Perform inspection activities using precision measurement tools and advanced inspection methods (calipers, height gages, scanners, portable CMMs as applicable).
  • Maintain accurate, audit-ready documentation and full traceability within MES/ERP systems.
  • Identify, document, and support resolution of nonconformances, including MRB participation and corrective action follow-through.
  • Ensure measurement system integrity, including calibration tracking and removal of out-of-tolerance equipment.
  • Proactively identify quality risks on the shop floor and partner cross-functionally to drive timely resolution.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in inspection methods, supporting standardization and best practices.
  • Mentor and support junior inspectors, reinforcing quality standards and inspection discipline.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts to improve first-pass yield and reduce defects.
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of quality inspection experience in aerospace, defense, or precision manufacturing.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and specifications.
  • Advanced experience with precision measurement tools and inspection techniques.
  • Working knowledge of AS9100 and AS9102 (FAI requirements).
  • Experience with MES/ERP systems for inspection documentation and traceability.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently own inspection scope and make quality-driven decisions.
  • Must meet U.S. export control (ITAR) requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with portable CMMs, laser scanning, or large-part inspection systems.
  • Familiarity with inspection software such as PolyWorks, PC-DMIS, Verisurf, or InspectionXpert.
  • Experience supporting MRB, NCRs, and corrective action processes.
  • Knowledge of weld inspection standards (AWS D17.1).
  • Exposure to supplier quality and aerospace prime requirements.
  • Experience mentoring or guiding junior team members.
Work Environment:
  • Onsite role based in Chatsworth, CA.
  • Shop environment with exposure to active manufacturing conditions.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive inspection tasks.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work around large assemblies.
  • Flexibility to support extended hours or weekends as needed.
