Job description
This highly visible role is responsible for delivering men's basketball play-by-play coverage, producing compelling audio and digital content, and enhancing the overall fan experience through storytelling and multimedia engagement. The Director of Broadcasting serves as a key representative of both LEARFIELD and the University of Washington, working closely with athletics personnel, coaches, student-athletes, corporate partners, media affiliates, and internal stakeholders to produce high-quality broadcasts and content that support the university's brand and business objectives.
In addition to men's basketball broadcasting responsibilities, this position will contribute to digital and social content, athletics and property events, sponsorship initiatives, and strategic efforts designed to promote ticket sales and strengthen the University of Washington brand.
Success in this role requires exceptional communication skills, strong broadcast and production expertise, attention to detail, creativity, and a passion for collegiate athletics. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment and can balance live-event responsibilities with content creation, partner support, public appearances, and collaboration across multiple functions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Broadcast & Content Production
- Serve as the primary play-by-play broadcaster for University of Washington men's basketball, including live pregame, in-game, and postgame coverage.
- Conduct regular interviews with coaches, student-athletes, and other stakeholders for use across audio, digital, social, and emerging media platforms.
- Host and produce weekly men's basketball shows, daily or weekly audio reports, feature programming, and other content as assigned.
- Develop and produce original features and storytelling content for men's basketball pregame programming and other Huskies athletics initiatives.
- Provide voice-over and commercial production services for promotional content, sponsorship activations, ticket sales initiatives, and university marketing efforts.
- Write articles, blog posts, or other content for property or athletics publications and digital platforms as requested.
- Ensure thorough preparation, research, fact verification, and content accuracy for all broadcasts and productions, including appropriate review of sensitive or potentially controversial topics.
- Maintain a digital archive of radio broadcasts and other audio content.
Broadcast Operations & Event Support
- Coordinate and oversee game-day broadcast operations and on-site production crews.
- Work closely with affiliate stations, broadcast partners, athletics personnel, and LEARFIELD stakeholders to ensure successful broadcast execution.
- Coordinate production responsibilities based on weekly programming plans and affiliate relations needs.
- Assist with planning, scheduling, and pre-production logistics for broadcasts, coaches' shows, special programming, and other projects.
- Support the integration of audio, television, digital, and social media efforts across Huskies Sports Properties and Washington Athletics.
- Assist with property and athletics events as requested, including university ceremonies, banquets, public appearances, and Hall of Fame events.
- Travel to away contests and other events as required by the men's basketball schedule.
University of Washington Athletics Support
- Serve as the primary media contact for a designated Olympic sport program, as assigned by Washington Athletics, provided those responsibilities do not conflict with men's basketball broadcast duties.
- Collaborate with Washington Athletics to develop content that promotes ticket sales, fan engagement, and the University of Washington brand.
- Represent LEARFIELD, Huskies Sports Properties, and the Huskies Sports Network at banquets, public appearances, alumni events, and other university or community functions.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with athletics leadership, coaches, media relations, marketing, development, alumni organizations, and other university stakeholders.
Partnership & Business Support
- Support sponsorship activation efforts through branded content, creative features, commercial production, and partner integrations.
- Assist the Huskies Sports Properties sales team with client meetings, sales calls, research, and the development of creative audio, video, digital, or print materials as requested.
- Participate in sales meetings or partner presentations when broadcaster involvement would support the opportunity.
- Help strengthen relationships among LEARFIELD, the University of Washington, corporate partners, broadcast affiliates, and other key stakeholders.
Leadership & Administration
- Coordinate the activities of broadcast personnel, production crews, and game-day staff as assigned.
- Assist property leadership and LEARFIELD Audio leadership with annual planning, budget forecasting, and operational initiatives.
- Manage assigned responsibilities within approved budget parameters.
- Support the planning, development, and implementation of other LEARFIELD broadcast initiatives as requested.
- Foster positive working relationships and effective collaboration across Huskies Sports Properties, Washington Athletics, broadcast partners, and LEARFIELD operating teams.
- Support internal training, development, and knowledge-sharing efforts related to broadcasting and content production.
- Ensure compliance with all LEARFIELD policies, university requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Five or more years of play-by-play broadcasting experience at the NCAA Division I level, excluding college radio, or comparable professional or nationally syndicated experience.
- Demonstrated experience producing live sports broadcasts, audio programming, and multimedia content.
- Strong knowledge of basketball, sports broadcasting, media production, and storytelling techniques.
- Experience creating content for digital and social media platforms.
- Exceptional on-air presence and verbal communication skills.
- Strong writing, research, interviewing, and content-development skills.
- Strong organizational and project-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to represent LEARFIELD and the University of Washington professionally in public-facing settings.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and travel as required by athletic schedules.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Broadcasting, Journalism, Sports Media, or a related field.
- Experience serving as a primary play-by-play voice for a collegiate or professional basketball program.
- Experience working within collegiate athletics, professional sports, media organizations, or multimedia rights environments.
- Knowledge of broadcast engineering, audio systems, and production workflows.
- Experience supporting sponsorship integrations, branded content initiatives, and partner activations.
- Familiarity with NCAA athletics and multimedia rights operations.
- Experience building relationships with coaches, athletics administrators, media affiliates, alumni organizations, and corporate partners.
Application Requirements:
Applications should include:
- One basketball play-by-play sample in MP3 format.
- One additional play-by-play sample in MP3 format.
- A resume outlining relevant broadcasting and production experience.
WAV and WMA audio formats will not be accepted.
The successful candidate is expected to begin with the 2026-2027 men's basketball season.
