Assistant Coach - Baseball

This position is responsible for assisting the head baseball coach with all aspects of the men's baseball program, including the administration of day-to-day aspects of a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III baseball program. This includes a commitment to the student-athletes' academic progress and degree completion. This is a full-time, benefit-eligible, exempt position.

The successful candidate will have an opportunity to mold and cultivate the baseball program at the University of St. Thomas. The program will be a part of the NCAA and will function as a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). The candidate, in conjunction with the head baseball coach, will be instrumental in determining the foundation and direction of the program.

Reporting lines:

The Assistant Baseball Coach will report to the Head Baseball Coach for all matters related to the baseball program and will work closely with Admissions, faculty, administration, and staff to help advance UST athletics.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Student development theory is used to create, plan, and implement educational, social, physical, and cultural programming designed to enhance the overall experience and achievement of both undergraduate and graduate students. These means are accomplished through the following specific duties:

  • Assist in the day-to-day activities of an NCAA DIII baseball program.
  • Stay updated and compliant with all NCAA Division III rules and regulations.
  • Recruitment of student-athletes in compliance with UNIVERSITY and NCAA DIII policies & procedures
  • Collaborate with the head coach on practice and game preparation.
  • Facilitate scheduling and travel arrangements.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with regional and national coaching organizations and associations.
  • Coordinate with the Recreational Sports Office and off campus facilities with the scheduling of practices and other team events on and off campus
  • Work with the Faculty Athletics Representative
  • Coordinate with other offices on campus including Admissions, Financial Aid, and the Registrar
  • Participate actively in campus events and support the University community and provide a leadership presence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Baseball coach in accordance with the Director of Athletics and Recreational Sports
  • Serve as assistant game day administrator for other sports as assigned.
  • Design, market and manage summer youth baseball camps and clinics.
  • Serve as facility monitor for safety and well-being of participants in athletic activities.

Supervisory responsibilities:

The Assistant Baseball Coach will work in conjunction with any volunteer assistants and possibly supervise student assistants and a team manager.

Fiscal responsibilities:

The Assistant Baseball Coach is responsible for abiding by university rules and guidelines for all expenditures including business departmental expenditures for the Baseball program.

Knowledge and skills required:

A bachelor's degree in Kinesiology, Sport Management or a related field is preferred with a minimum of three years of baseball coaching experience. The successful candidate must also have excellent verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills. Basic computer skills should include word processing and Excel spreadsheets.

Working conditions:

Position requires irregular office hours including after-hours and weekend work to attend competitions, conduct practices and attend university events. Office hours will be established in consultation with the Head Baseball Coach and Director of Athletics. Physical requirements: will work in outside weather conditions and have the physical capabilities to meet the physical demands of the position including running, lifting, swinging a baseball bat, exercising, and bending for short and extended periods of time. This is a full-time, benefit-eligible, exempt position.
